Default Muffler sound question

This is getting frustrating. I changed my stock system with a catback Borla muffler (not an XR-1). The muffler is a round straight through design. it seems that the car is now quieter than it was witht the stock muffler. I am thinking of exchanging the muffler again, would another muffler be louder OR since this is a straight through design will this be the loudest it gets?

I just installed an XR-1, it is quieter at idle and "poppy" between 2 and 3k rpm. After that, it is not loud - but nice.

Loud enough for the track? I am looking for something that I can hear with a helmet on, 2 windows open and going 100 mph.

Loud noises are just the efforts of a weak mind trying to express itself.
No offense intended, just my opinion. :-)

wow that's deep.

It can also be the quest for an intuitive mind to hear his car so he can keep his eyes on the track.

To answer your question - no, it is not that loud.

So i would need something louder. Can I run with no muffler? I took the muffler off and started it and it didn't seem too loud.

The factory catalytic converter has a resonator integrated into the design that is responsible for the majority of sound dampening. When I removed the catalytic converter and replaced it with a Magnaflow High Flow cat, my car had more resonance.

Those with Borla XR-1s that want more sound should try removing the factory cat and swapping it with a straight pipe or high flow cat if they want more sound.

that was my next thought. I also bought a gutted cat, would that make a difference?

+1 on the Magnaflow high-flow cat for good sound.

I have a Borla (I think its an XR1 - oval type muffler) with stock resonator, and just removed the Cat. It sounds rather "blatty" in the mid range, and definately lets you know that you're driving a 4cyl. car. IMO the quality of sound was much better with the Cat in place. I would be interested in hearing a strait pipe though. Maybe its the resonator causing my "problems"

Despite gutting the cat, the resonator still hasn't been tampered with. There will be an increase in sound, but the resonator will smoothen the turbulent exhaust flow so it won't be raspy or ricey.

My car sounds realy good with stock and no cat. When i shift gears it sounds like a blow off valve. I took a friend for a ride and he thought it was a turbo, I said no I wish it was a turbo.
