Muffler sound question

This is getting frustrating. I changed my stock system with a catback Borla muffler (not an XR-1). The muffler is a round straight through design. it seems that the car is now quieter than it was witht the stock muffler. I am thinking of exchanging the muffler again, would another muffler be louder OR since this is a straight through design will this be the loudest it gets?

No offense intended, just my opinion. :-)

It can also be the quest for an intuitive mind to hear his car so he can keep his eyes on the track.

The factory catalytic converter has a resonator integrated into the design that is responsible for the majority of sound dampening. When I removed the catalytic converter and replaced it with a Magnaflow High Flow cat, my car had more resonance.
Those with Borla XR-1s that want more sound should try removing the factory cat and swapping it with a straight pipe or high flow cat if they want more sound.

I have a Borla (I think its an XR1 - oval type muffler) with stock resonator, and just removed the Cat. It sounds rather "blatty" in the mid range, and definately lets you know that you're driving a 4cyl. car. IMO the quality of sound was much better with the Cat in place. I would be interested in hearing a strait pipe though. Maybe its the resonator causing my "problems"

My car sounds realy good with stock and no cat. When i shift gears it sounds like a blow off valve. I took a friend for a ride and he thought it was a turbo, I said no I wish it was a turbo.
