Then I talked to a local repair shop and was told to stick with 911’s. The shop told me spare parts for these cars are becoming very hard to find and very expensive. They also said Porsche wants these cars off the road, and Porsche is not stocking replacement parts anymore. They went on to say that many times a repair ends up costing more than what the car is worth. What’s going on here is this true, are these cars really money pits?

As far as expensive? It's a Porsche...enough said. As far as parts? I've had no issue, and there are many sites that stock every part imaginable for 944s! You can for sure find them here as most are site sponsors. I doubt Porsche "wants these cars off the road", that just sounds like someone trying to convince you not to buy one. I think they're great cars and I've enjoyed owning my 951!

I bought a 928 and found that parts were expensive and hard to find and the aftermarket didn't exist for them. Now that I have my 951 I am very happy and have no problem finding tons of parts for it at reasonable prices. If you are already used to paying for Porsche parts you will have no problem with a 944...

my expenses for the past yearand a half have been... um, hood lifts, whatever the oil and filters have cost... a new battery. Oh, and I changed the transmission oil.
Then again, my car looks to have been relatively well-maintained with no PO weirdness, and a recent clutch. No documentation for the timing belt, balance belt or water pump but the first two look new.
You know what they - the most expensive Porsche is a cheap Porsche

you could look around at some of the sponsor websites and check out the prices for parts you think you may need someday... then decide if the parts are expensive or not.
Expensive being relative, and all.
As for being hard to find... people part out cars all the time... you should have no problem finding most common parts. There are some oddballs that are becoming scarce/expensive, though... like the 2.7L head (1989 only?)

An 8v 944 isn't terribly difficult to keep going, but it's not terribly fast. A turbo is the opposite.

I love my 944 Turbo. I have had it for 10 years and will keep it for 10-20 more. I have no worries about maintaining it or finding parts.
I also have an 84 944 race car. Again I will keep it for as long as I can. Money pits. Well they no more money pits than any othe 20 year Porsche. Buy a nice solid car and it will serve you well. Buy a "cheap" car and it will become much more expensive that it first appears.

My friend had to buy valves at $200+ each for his 70s 911. Compare that to $32. My other friend's 80s 911 is not running right now and the mechanic said the engine should be "reconditioned" every year for it to be running properly. Yes the maintenance can cost several times the cost of the car but a running 944 can be bought for less than $1k where a running 911 costs 10 times more so its hard to spend $100k on repairs for a 911. If he thinks spare parts are hard to find, go to ebay motors and type in 944.
