Default Noob 944 owner.. sunroof ??s

Hey all, I just bought a 86 944 which was going to just be my "get around/daily driver" but I'm really liking it and I'm going to start restoring it.
I have an issue with the pop up sun roof. It doesn't latch down in the back when closed. I can push it open from the inside. Did something on my latches break? I can still see the pins on the end of the drive gear and it doesn't make noise as it opens/closes. When open, it is locked in position. Any ideas would be appreciated.

BTW.. this is my 3rd Porsche but it's been years.. and they were 911s. Sure is nice to have a comfortable riding Porsche.

Always the same thing, the small platics gear are shut, You need to open the latch, replace the gears, adjust the clutch and your done. Do a search around here, it's been discussed a lot. Also take a look at www.clarks-garage.com
He has a great right up to fix all the sunroof bugs.

Edit: Ho and welcome to Rennlist. Post pcitures of your car.

For an easy temporary solution, when closing the sunroof release the switch as soon as the sunroof is closed (before the arms have a chance to retract too far).

If the roof lifts and locks open the gears cannot be broken! If the latches go too far down
to lock the roof closed, it is either operator error or a switch problem.

You might be right, I just reread his post and what does "When open, it is locked in position." mean?

if the arms are retracting too far, they are prob adjusted wrong from someone replacing the gears. Thing to do is pull the rear headliner, put the arms all the way down like if you were closing the sunroof. PUll the covers where the gears are, move the arms up a couple teeth, reinstall the gears. Then when you put the ign into the #1 position it should go down the rest of the way. Should only go down and latch with igniton ON.

Thanks. I'll give these a try. I did a search but didn't find (first few pages anyway) anything about it.
I did remove the cover panel to access but when I got to the headliner, I didn't want to remove it... at least without knowing that I HAD to. The headliner, like everything else, is so brittle that when I touch it, it tears.
"When open, it is locked in position" means that when I open up the roof, it holds it's position and doesn't "free move" like when it's closed. Just didn't think it would be gears since it does drive open/closed.

I'll get a pic up.. but remember.. I'M JUST GETTING STARTED. (it's that bad) I have to make a few more posts before I can upload a pic.

And NO, the nitrous bottle in my avatar isn't on this car..

I had the same problem when I got my 951. About 5 teeth were stripped on each of my gears. I you operated the switch you'd get whirring, if you helped the arms they'd move to the open position. If you retracted them they'd skip closed and drop to the release position.

It's the gears.

Mine had the same problem, eventually got so bad the roof didn't operate at all, I have heard it's a pain to align the gears, so I have just lived with it....
