Default Thinking of buying a 996 C2!

Should I be talked out of it?? I know about the RMS issue, and about possible engine failure (small chance, but still). The 996's are priced very low considering they were $75k cars 5 or 6 years back!

Thoughts?

Hold off. I'm in the market for an S2 in the northeast when I have the money.

The 996 I drove threw me back into the seat nicely.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!...jk...if it's what you really want then I say go for it. They're pretty nice cars and it seems like you know what to keep an eye out for.

I would absolutely consider a 996. They are great cars.

my brother looked at a few this summer. one that was a real stunner was an 01 with 22k miles. the motor was replaced when it had 10k. it had psm, sport seats, 18" wheels and some other goodies.

msrp was north of 75k, and he could have gotten it for about 37k.

someone else i know got a 99 with 30k for 30k about a year ago.

i say go for it if you can. you only live one.

BTW, got any leads on a nice used fembot? i want one with not too many miles.

Whats the issue with the motors in these cars? Do people keep hitting the self destruct buttons?

Seems the early 99's had an intermix problem where the block was too pourus, and the oil and coolant mixed - resulting in a giant paperweight. Porsche replaced the motors in cars with warranties. Otherwise, it would cost around $12k for a rebuilt motor from Porsche.

The later cars also had an issue with another main seal going, causing catastrophic failure. Several people on the 996 board have had engines fail on them, out of nowhere. Percentage wise, it's tiny. But, my luck...

Tom--Where was that 01? That sounds like just what I'm looking for, give or take. $40k for a $75k 911...and owning a Porsche that's NOT 18 years old sounds good to me!

Andy,

The RMS issue with the 996 isnt as bad as it seems and the cost to replace the RMS isnt that expensive. I have 56K on my 996 and the car is as dry as ever.

If you are seriously considering a 996, go for a test drive, see how you like it then make your decision.

BTW..I would say buy the 996 and keep the S2

It's the Intermediate Seal that can go and cause the engine to fail...it just came to me.

Alex - Yeah, I'd go for a test drive, if I found ANY car that's close to what I want within 100 miles. Seems if I wanted a silver C2 Cabrio, I would have my choice of 20 cars! Coupes are just not for sale for some reason. Maybe in a month or so, spring will produce more sellers?

Andy,

FYI...cost for the RMS is a bout $600-800 at an independent shop. About $1K at the stealership.

I would also advise to test drive any 996, it doesnt have to be the one your going to buy just any format. You get a good feeling of the cars capability and I can assure you....your mind will be made in that second when shifting from 1st to 2nd.

good luck and my offer to test drive mine is still there when I get her out of hibernation.

I'm pretty superficial - I want a 996 based on looks alone! And 300 hp has got to pull harder than 208, right!?

And thanks! If it's not too much trouble, I'll take you up on your offer, and buy you a cup of coffee at Starbucks while I check out the engine and interior!

Andy
The car is in garden city. we looked at it over the summer. it is black with gray/black. immaculate. only one scratch about two inches long under the spoiler over the motor.

if you want i will try to find the guys phone number, maybe he still has it.rest assured, his is not the only one out there. there are plenty of under 30k mile cars for under $40k.

As for me, I am going to pick up a cayman s for $25k with 25k miles on it in another year or so. someone i know just traded in his 01 boxster s with a bunch of options including heated seats. car had 25k miles on it (a lot track but dealer didnt know) and he got 19k on the trade.

Andy - will this P-car also NOT see any track or AX? Shame to have such a wonderful piece of machinery and NOT use it for what it is intended for...
