In 1988 Porsche introduced the 944 Turbo S. The 944 Turbo S had a more powerful engine with 247 hp (compared to the standard 944 Turbo's 220 or 217 hp) and 250 ft·lbf torque (versus 243 ft·lbf). This higher output was achieved by using a larger turbo housing on the exhaust side, a re-mapped DME/KLR engine computer, and larger sodium-cooled exhaust valves. In June of 1988, Car and Driver's road test of the 944 Turbo S demonstrated 0-60 mph times of 5.5 seconds and a quarter mile time of 13.9 seconds at 101 mph.

I've seen stock turbos with "turbo s" on the back as well as heard many people on this board say the same thing.

If there was any S on the rear of a 951 it was put there by the owner. The only cars to roll off the assembly line with S's on the rear were the 944S and S2. As far as the Turbo, the Turbo S was first seen in 88 as an option package, and for the first half of the model year only came in Silver Rose. After 1988.5 they began offering the Turbo S package in all colors. There was a difference in the turbos in 88 between a regular 951 (having the k26/6) and the 951S (having the k26/8), the S having a larger exhaust housing. In 1989 they dropped the k26/6 all together and 951s came standard with the entire Turbo S package (M030 suspension, S4 brakes, larger turbo, forged wheels, chasis stiffening, M44/52 engine). Whoever told you that they came with an S on the rear was wrong. I'm just trying to clear up any misinformation.
