Default Fuel pump a pain?

How much of a pain is it to change a fuel pump on a 944? Is it inside the gas tank?
Thanks

Its located outside the gas tank. Its actually one of the few things on a 944 thats easy to do .

Clarks-Garage has a nice write up on changing it in the shop manual.

Very easy change, similar to a VW. Make sure you crimp off the supply side before taking it loose or prepare for a gas bath.

Yup... it's pretty easy (like many things on this car; I don't know why people think 944's are so hard to work on), but you MUST clamp that fuel line coming from the tank real good, or else you'll shower yourself with however much gasoline is in your tank. Just be careful to only clamp it with something that wont damage the lines. I used vice grips with teeth that were covered in a few layers of duct tape.

I didn't know there were two colors of pumps. My 85.5 had a blue one and I put a blue one back on. Works great.

You may want to liberally spray all of the fuel line connections into and out of the pump with PBBlaster before you begin. the location of the fuel pump makes it very susceptible to oxidation.

The process itself is not difficult. Be aware that your fittings may be rusted and/or corroded.
While you're in there, consider replacing the fuel filter (if needed) & the rubber fuel lines & hoses, + any corroded hardware.

mine is green on my 924S, does this mean that i need to purchase the green one? i'm trying to figure out if part #'s are different or not...

Edit: also from paragon-products.com

"If your 924S,944,944T fuel pump is blue use 0.580.464.021
If your 924S,944,944T fuel pump is green, use 0.580.464.028"

so whats the difference? does one push more fuel through then the other?

So easy, I even did it by my lonesome... Actually, it wasn't really easy for me, but I'm not the best wrench either. I did do it though...

If you're careful cutting the rubber cover off, it can be reused.
