Default Flat Six in a 944? Is it possible?

It's probably a stupid question, but is there any way to swap a flat six into a 944? I know there would be heavy, HEAVY modification involved, assuming it wasn't too wide just to fit in the car.

Just daydreaming here, that's all.

You could always just get a Flat six and put it in a 911

One of the greatest parts of these cars is their 50/50 weight balance. Adding a larger engine like this seems like it would certainly upset this balance very quickly. There are plenty of other ways to squeeze extra HP outta these things without adding so much weight.

Probably not a Porsche 911 flat six. You'd need too many custom parts, including finding a way to mate the tranny with the motor.

But given the fact that Chevy small-block V8's have found their way into 944 engine bays, it's not impossible that a 3.1 liter V6 GM powerplant would work.

Not sure WHY you'd want to do a silly thing like that... but hey, it's your daydream...

Didn't someone post a pic of a 944 with a Boxster mill under the hood a while back?

Yes, there is a 944 with a flat 6, front engined, with drum brakes.

No, that's not a joke. (ok, well maybe the idea is, but the car exists)

I think the 350chevys are a little beefy for our little 944's. But what about a "small" small block V8. Say the Lexus 4.0L V8 or the rover 3.9 or any of the myriad of Ferrari small v8's? This is a post on the wrong forum obviously, but the thought of a 911 motor in a 944 just seems even more outrageous than the v8 conversions.

It's been done, with heavy modifications. I seem to recall the car is in Sweden or somewhere in that vicinity. The photos were posted up here around a year ago, a good search will probably find them.

It would be hell to work on that engine once you've shoehorned it in (due to clearance and lack of space). Almost as bad as trying to work on the V8 they shoehorned into the 928.

I played with the dimensions of the subaru engines, and without cutting they won't fit... too wide.

Of course it can be done.
However it will take lots of time, money, and custom fabrication to pull it off. Heck you can throw a jet engine into a 944 too or even a Hemi.

Now clearly not all things present good or even semi-decient values.
