Default I think I have a failing bearing in my AC compressor...

It still blows cold and works fine but a distinct whirring sound is coming from the compressor. Any reccomendations on where to get a used or rebuilt unit. funny thing is I have a core for a turn in.

I have a used R12 compressor I'll sell you for $40!

Does the bearing make noise when the AC is on, or off? It might just be in the clutch.

The system is still R12 and the the beraing noise is constant. Is your used compressor working? if so what year is it off of?

It worked a year ago before I took it off the car (track car). It's from an '88 turbo S. I actually have a second spare from an '88 turbo S, but that one has been sitting around for several years, so the status is unknown. If you're really interested, you could have both -- I will never need them.

The bearing in the clutch can be replaced for approx. $20. I can look up the info for the place that sold me the part here in San Antonio if you're interested.

When mine was bad it made a grinding sound that would go away when it was turned on.

I also replaced the bearing in the clutch. You can get one at Northside Refrigeration Supply in San Antonio.

Is the clutch bearing replaceable while the compressor is still mounted up? The thing blows Ice cold air right now, it just whirrs all the time and leaves me with the uneasy feeling it is going to pick the worst possible moment to sieze up....

Yes you can do it with the compressor still mounted. IIRC Scuba Steve did a very good write up on the procedure, which is what I followed.

If you are hearing the noise all the time instead of just when the AC is functioning, it is indeed the clutch. You definitely want to take care of this sooner rather than later -- when it seizes you will loose the belt running the alternator and will not get far.

Glad to see that somebody got some use out of it. I think the writeup may be on Clark's Garage, or maybe here. It's really easy to do, and costs a whole lot less time and $$$ than replacing any other parts of the compressor.

That is my fear that the thing will sieze and then POP...
