Yikes....
Can't believe how many younger people here have to scrape pennies together to live because all their money is going into a 944. Not a good way to start adulthood. I bought my 944 at 19, but only because I was financially stable and could afford maintenance without having to compromise in any other aspect of my life. I also put my education ahead of the car. I dunno...it just seems like when you're 17, 18, 19 years old that whether or not you should buy a Turbo Porsche should be one of the last decisions you should be making. I'm sure I would have loved to of had a 951 too, but I learned to enjoy what I had and made the most out of it and now I appreciate my car for what it is.

Yay for NA! (or those of us who can't afford a 951)
If you want to go fast and embarass cars that cost 10 times as much as your 944, take it to the track. A Corvette might be fast off the line but its a dog in corners. When you're passing them doing 80 on a 90 degree sweeper be sure to wave. Pull out of the corner, downshift and stand on the gas.

I am on my third S2. I had a NA for a few months, and have a 951 similar to the one you described.
The NA or the S2 are much better for day to day driving. My 951 is a DE toy. It is not an enjoyable car for everyday use, too loud, too stiff, too long for boost to kick in.

if your 83 is in good shape keep it. College is busy and you don't need the hassle of sorting out a 951. Wait untill you get out of school and have stable income. Then keep the 83 and get a 951 as toy.

Not that I disagree with the general consensus of this thread, but Michael Andretti once said
"You can sleep in your car, but you cant race your house." The 951 is a fast car......if that is what you are pursuing.

I'll chime in here.
I'm seventeen as well; and am currently looking for a quality 944. With that said, there's been a single philosophy that has guided me thus far through my life, and I feel will stay with me until the day I die.
Quite simply, follow your heart and realize that no matter how crazy an idea might seem, it will always be possible if it is truly what you want. Thing will always work out for you in the end.
Don't look to others for guidance; look within. If the turbo is what you truly want, then trust that things will work out in the end. But whatever you do, don't think that its going to be a walk in the park - nothing in life ever worth doing is. Good luck with whatever your decision might be.

I had a 944 when I was 17. I was dead broke, my family was dead broke and I still managed to buy one. The problem was when it it needed to be serviced $$$.
Remember! The cheapest thing about a Porsche 944 is Buying it.

ok, first of all.. we hardly knew ya. ![surrender](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/surrender.gif)
Everyone tells me 'no,' but I still want a Turbo... Is it too much?
I have an amazingly capable NA (that was an absolute steal), perfectly suited for the situation. But.... I. STILL. WANT. A. TURBO.
Do I wait a few very painful years, until it makes more sense to buy one, or give in and live 'on the edge' ????
they come, they go.. but if you ever make it back...
you gotta give in to the urge man; live on the edge or die...

the turbo isn't too much to handle, my 2nd car when i was 19 had 300hp, i had no issues with it, no tickets or anything. it comes to how mature you are. i personally think you should wait till after college to get the turbo, the n/a is more reliable and better for a college student.
when you graduate, hopefully you can get a job that pays enough to afford the turbo and the maintenance that goes with it. hell you might be able to swing both the 8v and the turbo and make the 8v a track car. by then you may choose to get an S2 instead of the turbo, 210hp vs 217hp, about the same weight, more reliable
note: that 300hp car is now 370hp and has seen the needle go past 170 on the highway...once. i'm still pretty tame with it
