Default Anyone own a late-model Audi S4?

I'm considering an engine swap, but don't really want to go the LS1 course.

Considering that the 944 is from the Audi parts bin anyways, why not put a high-output Audi motor in?

If any of you own one, I'd greatly appreciate it if you took a minute to pull out the old measuring tape and see how wide that big DOHC 4.2 is.

Thanks.

The original I5 turbo is a beast and when modified can put down in excess of 400hp.

The 2.7T out of the B5 S4 can also be tuned like a ****. Finally the V8 out of the B6/7 S4's... Not as tunable, heavier, but great torque and sound. I can ask down at my Audi shop for some specs later on today.

I thought the V8 in the B6/B7's was actually lighter than the 2.7t?

You can make HUUGE power with that 2.2 T.
700 plus at the wheels, if you go crazy. It is a real engine.
Also a cool swap for a 944.

yeah you can tune the wee out of a 2.7t, dont even get involved with the V8s there not tuneable at all. Though Id like to see how you mount this engine in your 44 because, audi puts there engine out in front of the front wheels!

There are alot of metal shops around here that could make me some spiffy custom mounts/custom bellhousing if I went for that swap.

Schwank - I'd really appreciate it.

I"d say go for the 2.2 I5 swap...it'll be a lot easier than the 2.7tt or the v8. Easier still would be swapping in a 951 engine...probably woulnd't be anymore expensive, espeically considering that labor on the install would be a lot less

and you'll get comparable power levels from both

If you do go audis 2.7t make sure you upgrade the turbos to K07s when your in there if your planning on making large power.

I've got a buddy with a 2001 S4, silver on black, 6sp with chips, downpipes, K03s, yoko avs sports, cleared cats, and some suspension goodies from Koni and H&R. We raced an automatic transmission C6 from a stop and it was the Audi all the way to 60; though the corvette still ruled the freeway. I couldn't believe it; S4s don't have the same "punch in the gut" feel when the power comes on as cars like the 951. It also feels mushy as hell stock. Simple suspension upgrades performed miracles for that car. My friend said that the tuning company added in a note that "the stock K03 turbos will fail prematurely with this package."

I didn't know such easy power could be made on the I5? I nearly bought a '95 S6, but it needed a whole new transmission and passed it up. I didn't realize they were so tunable...is that kind of power on stock internals and driveline parts?

Ouch Dan, was that your S6??? Looks like it was a beauty...

Another vote for the AAN motor, but then again I am a biased as I own one. Mine is just chipped and has a claimed 275. I have not dynoed it, but I have kept pace with a friend in a E46 M3, granted it was 30deg outside. There are many out there making far more.

Always wondered if the motor could be shoehorned in there. Be the first to do it and I will cheer you on!

Na, Riff.. it was a good friend's. (Brad-AgRosa on here, has a low mileage TS). Fortunately he replaced it promptly with a red one with lower miles. They are very nice cars!

If you put this engine in a 944, you should do the whole driveline. A low 4x4 951 variant would be decent!!

To make a 4x4, see the thread titled "My truck is faster than yours" lol.

a 4WD 944 would be pretty sweet though. If the front arms and stuff get in the way too much, you might be able to get away with pulling the front driveshaft out of the transfer case

Hello all,

I'm putting an Audi 20v engine into my 944 (see www.944-20v.nl). I'm starting with a n.a. engine (7a) first but an AAN might follow. Funny thing is, I'm reading a lot about the Audi 5-cylinder being a relatively easy swap but nothing (or very little) about someone actually doing it. If there is someone here that has done the swap, what kind of flywheel / clutchplate / pressure plate did you use?

Someone definitely has done it, I'm trying to contact the owner => http://youtube.com/watch?v=wNYqz0k_MEo
