New ones are nice because they open the hatch when you press the release button. I put in new hood shocks the other day, its nice not having to prop the roof up to prevent it from falling on my head when the wind blows. Changing them is defenetley a two man job.. it was a bitch doing it myself. And same with the hatch shocks, that freaken hatch is heavy as hell.

I put new hatch shocks in and immediately the glass separated from the hatch at the top. Too strong, I think, especially in hot weather. So be careful.

Super easy job.

Two years on the 951 and still seperating the hatch glass nicely.

here's the thing, if you buy the expensive ones then it makes the hatch go up slowly and nicely, but if you buy the cheap ones, then the shocks just fire the hatch up so fast each time that it really does begin to separate the glass from the hatch. what i did, because i bought expensive ones for my 924S and the cheap ones for the 944, is i put one cheap one with an expensive one, and the same for the other, so now it goes up quickly at first but then the expensive one kicks in a slows it down.

THAT will bite you in the ***. Because of the differing presures of the two, it is putting uneven stress on the hatch glass. The chep side will separate at an angle.
NEVER change only one! Ask me how I figured this out!
Putting one cheap one and one nice one on there won't be as bad as fast, but it will have the same effect. Get another pair of good ones and sell the cheap ones on ebay.

yeah thats one of the next things i have to do, though I'm not in any rush. its winter and i don't use it much. also i try to keep my hand on it while its opening to make sure it doesn't fire up too hard. but i don't think I'll be selling the crappy ones on eBay, i think they'll make their way to the trash can!

AHH sell um. Why not. You're right, sort of. When it's down it is braced by the pins into the body, but it still exerts uneven force on the glass itself. So if they get replced in the spring, no big deal. I wouldn't leave them for say a year though. The sealant degradation along with the uneven force will really cause the proble. When it goes up, holding your hand on it doesn't help it. The force of the shocks is towards you, so it is really pushing unevenly.
