Nut size for 951 side skirt/rocker extension?
Ok, I've got my nifty side skirts to put on my 944 and it turns out that the nuts I thought would fit on those studs are the wrong size. So... anyone know what size I should buy?
I figure it's easier to ask than to bring the car in to Home Depot and start fiddling with everything in their screw aisle...

mine had the studs on the skirts, which went thru holes in the rocker panel and were secured from the back with washers/nuts.
if they're not the original studs it's hard to guess the size you need.
take the skirt into someplace with metric nuts as i don't know what selection hd will have.

Studs on the skirts? I've got two sets here (finding the best peices for one good set) and they all have holes on the skirts that bolt to studs on the chassis... Something ain't right here!

BB, i do not think its a conventional thread, i think the front mounts the same way as the rear portion, with the plastic nuts. I never mounted the front portion on my car because frankly i couldnt figure out how its done...besides it would make jacking up my already low car even more of a pain in the ***, the rear is pretty bad with the rear portion but i can live with it.
Anyhow from what i did gather, there is a metal bracket that attaches part of it to the underside of the car, then a rivet through the front part somewhere (i know, not ever descriptive).
Anyhow i needed to take a wire wheel to some of the studs to clean the undercoat stuff off the threads.

You might be able to find something from a place that carries alot of misc nuts and bolts. McMasterCar might have something also. You can still get them from Porsche also...
999.049.008.40 (PET says you need 10x)
and these little dish shaped washers
928.503.255.00 (8x needed)
I was lucky, the set of skirts i bought had a bag of used hardware, i did get two metal brackets also but they were both two different shapes.

the two pieces only fit one way on the back of the wheel well.
the studs are vertical, the heads are 10mm and i don't have any way to check the thread pitch.

Brian, if these are aftermarket skirts you have, I'd recommend not using plastic fasteners. They weigh a god bit more than the ABS plastic pieces intended to be fastened by the OE plastic nuts. I'd either bring one of the OE nuts to a hardware store and start checking for nuts that fit, or find a way to fasten it a different way. I wouldn't trust plastic nuts holding on aftermarket rockers!

We are talking about the 951/S2 plastic side skirts.
While we are on the subject, i could never get these things to sit completley flush with the rest of the body also. They are a real pain in the ***. They look nice..but really are a pain. They also make getting the car up on a two post lift that much harder! But again, my car is pretty low, so doing anything like that is a pain already.

I've only messed around with the driver's side, but the rear one looks like it'll mount flush. I'm not sure how the front piece will go, but I suspect I have a litte more bending of the bracket left. We'll see how the other side comes along!
I may just have to get the OEM parts (probably $8 each!) but I'd like to see what I can work out first.
Thanks for the help!

To echo what Jon stated the studs that are on the car are not conventional thread. If you want to do it right you ned to buy the factory nuts, you won't find nuts out there that are the same thread without spending more time/money. They aren't very expensive, I think they were under $2 each. Don't forget you need to order the attachement hardware for the front where the skirt connects to the wheelwell.
