Default Low beams won't work

Just recently I noticed that I had a passenger side front low beam headlight that wouldn't light on my NA, 1986, 944. Not really thinking, I just replaced the sealed beam headlight.(it is sealed high/low) After replacing that particular lamp, neither one of my low beams would work. In checking, I find that the original that I replaced tests okay. So, since this is obviously not a headlight problem, what could this problem be? The brights both work, but I have no low beams. When the lights "pop" up they start to light but go out right away. The only way to get both to light is to flip on the high beam. This lets only the brights work. I checked the fuses and the relay and all seems to test okay. Where should I be looking to find out why these will not work?

you can check the harness on the headlight and make sure its not rubbed or exposed. The wires may be getting pinched as the lights go up; grounding the circuit

Maybe a bad switch?

Right now I have a wiper switch that engages normal wipe operation, but will not wash and wipe. They randomly go bad, at least the early switches do (VW). Later ones may be higher quality.

Vote for checking the wires going to the bulb near the headlight. They take a lot of wear and tear bending all the time.

My low beams don't work also. High Beams work fine, and i use normal 55w bulbs original part. I have some LED H4 lamps also and they work but not with highbeams. I have to use the original bulbs now cus of the EU kontroll... The fuses are ok, relays are ok, so what to check ? Wher to check ?
Pleas help me......

Did your Turn Signal Indicator Stalk ever act strangely?

I ask because I had an issue where I would signal, and then my lights wouldn't work... Highbeams would work fine, but low beams were real touchy... Eventually i couldn't even use my Low Beams at all and Drove with my highbeams for weeks (Our cars are so low to the ground, and the stock lights suck so much, that not a oncoming car ever flashed me because of my highbeams HA HA)

Anyway I Replaced the Signal Stalk with another, and Lights all Work fine now. The Connections in the old stalk were all corroded...

Is it possible both of your low beams are burned out?

check for 12VDC at the connector for the low beam on the back of the head lamp, if there is 12V there your bulbs are suspect!

Then you have a broken or shorted wire, start with the bridge connector in the engine bay near the brake booster, and go from there.. factory service manual electrical digrams would greatly help you in tracking down the broken wires..

ALSO have you checked the wiring behind the lights, and the grounds?

FWIW, the switch will do funky things when they go bad, the low beams are on a seperate set of contacts inside the switch...
