Default Removing Front License Plate bracket?

Is this possible? I can't find what the screws connect to (and don't want to strip them). I don't have a front plate for my car, PO didn't have one, either.

Don't the screws screw into gromets in the bumper?

I tried unscrewing them and no matter how much force I use, I feel like I'm going to strip them.

Probably rusted in there? Did you try squirting some kinda penetrating oil in there first (wiping it off the paint ASAP of course)?

The screws on mine went into a threaded plastic insert in the bumper.

Hm, I'll give it some WD-40, wipe it off the paint, then try breaking the screws loose again. I guess I'll keep the bracket in case some overzealous cop pulls me over... :/

Pulled mine. I think it went into grommets in the bumper.
No front plate required in FL!

you may have to apply pressure on the back of the head with a flat tip then turn the screw out as you apply pressure. or try unscrewing it while pulling with a set of vice grips.
i had to install my bracket and figured it was some machine screws/bolts i needed, when i ordered the "correct" hardware, they ended up being just some regular old self tapping screws, although large in diameter. I think like the guys are saying above it just goes into a block back there or something.

So there's not a nut back there or anything, I just need some grease and some elbow grease?

Three times (in 10 years) i've been questioned by the cops as to why I dont have a front plate and I've always used the front bracket as an excuse. Expensive German Part, very hard to find, solid titanium blah blah blah. Its never failed. Of course it helps to have the front plate somewhere in the car.

You need to take the front bumper off. Simple 5 minute job; 2 bolts in the back side of the bumper. You'll see where the bracket bolts in.

I should add that that was for an 83 944. Did it a few months ago. Good luck.

dcl, thanks. I will try to give it a go this weekend. I have a feeling the process for an 83 is similar to an 85/1, if not identical.

Just to clarify, there's not a bolt or something else holding it in on the back side. Kinda tethered to the desk right now and can't run out into the parking lot.
