Acetone can damage clearcoat if it stays in contact too long. Be careful and you should be fine with it. As with any solvent, use as small an amount possible to get the job done.

you can remove it with a hair dryer and a piece of dental floss. heat up the strip as best you can without burning the paint then use the floss to essentially cut the molding off the car kinda like a cheese cutter. the floss won't hurt your paint and it will leave minimal residue on the body.
