Why not? Sounds like the budget is the factor, just find one with lots of service records for the usual 944 stuff! Of course the 968 is nicer, but 2 or 3x price? I'm sure you already know the auto's are pretty anemic, and might not have good resale, but if you need an auto for the wife, I would rather have a 944 than a chevy!! .02

You would be infinitely happier with the 968. If the budget permits, there's no comparison.

The fact that you even mentioned the 968 Tip makes me think it is in your possible consideration scope. The 968 will be much more pleasurable to drive, due to the tiptronic trans and more hp/torque. Plus it is a newer car and more refined.

The 968 Tip Cabrio I drove was a slug compared to my 944S 5-speed. I cannot imagine what a 140hp auto 944 would be like. Keep in mind this "test drive" was putzing around town, I was not able to ever open it up.

I had the same idea, automatic to deal with traffic better. I kept my 5-speed.

If you do alot of highway, the automatic's are less than ideal. 3-speed with no-overdrive. You will be turning 3000k at 65mph. Around town they are okay...but i would look elsewhere if its a long commute car.

also the automatic 944 is about a full 1.5 seconds slower than a 5spd 944 at 0-60mph. And the 5spd 8v n/a 944 is already pretty darn slow!

968 all the way if $ permits. A 944 auto is a dog and should never have been invented IMHO. Teach her to drive stick.

Sorry to offend any auto owners....they remind me of the 4 cyl Mustang...

Whew, and see, I was worried that I would come acrossed too harsh and incur the unbridled wrath of some 944 auto owners. Thanks for making my post seem not so bad.

if you need an auto and want a porsche, why not get a 928 auto? you can get one of the older ones for not too much more and even the slowest 928's have 250hp which is nearly double what a 944 auto puts out

968 tip or 928 S4 (87-91). Personally I'd go for the S4.
