If you need an auto consider only a 968 Tip or 928 S4. My parents have a 91 928 S4. Great car inspite of the auto. I consider it compareable to my 944 Turbo S. The other option is Boxster Tip. It will have the best auto box of bunch.

Of course there was once a 924S Twin Turbo Auto that was pretty fast at 3/4 throttle... O so I have heard...

Please quote the part of his post where he mentions budget.

If he has a specific dollar figure in mind, then he should mention it. We aren't mind readers.

With 944 auto and 968 being the only cars he mentioned, that gives a bit of a clue.

There's a large price difference between a 944 auto and a 968 tip. S4s can pull a wide range of prices, you can get into one for the same price as a nice 968 tip. We aren't talking about a GTS.

I hadn't considered the 928. I've never driven one. For the teach the wife to drive stick comments, no can do, she has slight paralysis in her right foot. My goal is to drive a 928 and a 968 then come back to the board.

Oh sorry about that! guess I should read the threads! My top limit is 14K my comfort zone is 10 to 11K. Obviously I was seriously tempted by the prospect of a Sub 5k 944 auto. Realistically I need to drive 90 miles per day 5 days per week. I also don't care about gas prices vis-a-vis the 928 v8. I am more concerned about the car holding up and my wife being able to use it sometimes. She feels left out with my 88 targa.

Now that helps! In this range, I can't believe you will top the 968. Either way, previous service history is a must, but you know that already. I know the 928 guys might disagree, but I would think the 928 will cost more overtime. I highly doubt you will find a nice, well maintained 928 in that range!

A 968 tip could very well cost more than a 928S4 as I passed on a running "fixer" 87 928S4 making clunking sounds (not rod knock - possibly torque tube) with a clean body and interior for $4k. A 968 in the same condition will cost $6k to $8k around here. The 928 is more of a car with 316 hp from 87+ and tops out in excess of 160 mph with an auto. The 928 is more comfortable than a 968 and gets somewhere around 20 mpg on the highway as it has a mercedes auto with an overdrive. The 928 is heavier and not as tossible if thats what she is looking for but most women I know want more comfort and stability (weight) than light and nimble sporty car where you can feel more bumps on the road. Both cars have fairly rare parts and they use very similar heads with some interchangeable parts as far as I know. Take your wife and test drive both cars as they are different beasts.

For a daily Driver go with the 968 tiptronic. It's a Inline four cylinder while the 928 S4 is a V8 with bad gas mileage.

Why do people insist 928s have bad gas mileage? The 968 does not get much more especially on the highway.

Within the budget of $10-$11K, you will probably find a nicer 928 than you will a 968.
