I agree with Tifo 10-11K will find you a nicer 928 then 968. Plus the 85-86.5 928's with the 32v V-8's are nice and they can be found for below 10K. However I perfer the looks of the 87-up myself. But take a look at some of the 86.5 928's as well.

20-22mpg in a supercharged S4 with 450rwhp over a 900 mile road trip isn't all that bad (not mine, a friends 928). Granted my 944S would have averaged 30 over the same trip.

OK I'm screwed. Got Excellence today and they do a 20K showdown with the 968 being one. There are only 2417 coupes out there! How many of them can be tips?

Unfortunately, more than 50% of them I have seen are tips. I personally wouldn't buy a 968 without the 6 speed. My cousin has a very light front damage cab with an extra tiptronics tranny. The car is mint other than the damage in the front and he bought it for his wife. She didn't want it and got a newer 5 series instead.

So, would the tip tranny work as a pretty easy swap for a 944? Second, is your cousin selling the extra one (just wondering)? Thanks.

I drove an '89 944 NA Auto for years. The car landed in my lap. Auto wouldn't have been my first choice. Nevertheless you learn to like it - it's great in stop & go commute traffic. Shifting down gets you some acceleration when needed. One caution.... that damper plate in the driveline wears out & needs replacing every 80K miles like clockwork. I now drive a '94 968 stick with vastly superior performance & overall fun/drivability.

I suppose you could theoretically put a tip tranny in a 944, but why would you? Even if you got the tranny itself cheap, getting the transmission control unit to talk to the ECU and to work with the shifter would be a pain in the ***...

probably cheaper to just get a 964 tip when all's said and done
