getting car painted have a question
#6
The shop I want to use is quoting around 5K - about $3200 of that is materials.
It's a great shop, and they paint they use is $95/liter. He said he tried to match a maco paint job once and had to buy the paint from them cause the color was so far off. The stuff they use is $5/liter.

I've seeeen terrrible maaco jobs but it seems the people that pay for the "higher quality" jobs acutally have a decent paintjob for the money (I wouldnt repaint a decent car..but I would consider it for a car with really crappy paint)

i really wish i had the place and time to do overalls for people. It usually takes a month of constant work AFTER i get off of work every day, weekends and 1200 in materials + labor. The garage i was using to do most of my work, i cannot use as much any more, so i'll be doing my stuff in my garage carefully on the DL so the neighbors dont call the cops.

I had Maaco paint my 944 2 1/2 years ago. Every other shop wanted $5-8k for a good (no not great, but good) paint job. I stripped the car down myself and had them shoot it with their two-stage paint.
Yes, it has some flaws and it does chip more readily. However, very few people notice the problems unless they are paying attention to it. After 2.5 years, it's held up pretty well, although it is garaged. It's not a perfect job, but I can live with the problems for the $3-6k that I didn't spend. It is not a concourse-quality job (though other car nuts will tell me that it is), but for what I wanted, it was worth it. Call me a "satisfied customer".
My recommendations are to look at the cars they've already done, remove the parts yourself (most paint failures will occure at the tape lines. Eliminate those and you eliminate most of the problems), and then use one of their higher levels. I wouldn't expect the $250 job to last long.
At this point my only concern is longevity, though I know that the next time it needs it I'll just do it myself.
Just my thought on the matter.

I also agree that it's not worth doing this to a car that isn't that bad.

A gallon would cover a car this size easily...sand tape and paint wouldn't be more than a day or twos work with the proper air tools, that is if there was no body work...say $500-$700 for paint (depends on colour) plus labour.
If your car is your pride and joy don't cheap out on such a major thing....otherwise you might as well drive a pinto.

When I tried to get mine painted, I got the distinct feeling that most of the shops didn't want to bother with me, either. Hell, Maaco was the only place that was even nice to me!
Or, at least, they didn't try and bull**** me...
