Needs a second different type alltogether. I replaced mine for less than $140 CND ... includes a new key and lock. The replacement keys are very hard to find.

You can modify the alarm lock to work with your ignition key. It's not really difficult to do:

It sounds the horn repeatedly at about 100 BPM if you open the door without turning the alarm off (and perhaps if you do other things).
I had the alarm key for my first 944. Both times I turned on the alarm I forgot and accidentally set it off.
I don't think my second car had the factory alarm. A previous owner had installed an aftermarket alarm and in the proicess really messed up the wiring harness.
I know I don't have the alarm key for my current 944. Thank god. It eliminates the possibility of my car triggering the most universally ignored sound in the universe: the car alarm.
Add it to the list of things i would pay to NOT have on my cars:

So let's say you put on the alarm, and accidentally get in the car causing it to go off. There's no way to shut it? Will getting out and turning the key shut the alarm? Will starting the car shut the alarm? Just wondering as I am undecided if I should fix it or not.

I believe the switch cuts power to the DME. I guess you could get in, open the window, reach out and turn the alarm on, then try to start the car. That'll tell you for sure.
