Default freakin t-belt snapped!

i was driving, and came to a red light, and after pulling out of gear, and putting it in neutral (at a complete stop) my freakin car just shut off.. I went to start it (figuring for some reason it stalled) but it had a high whine to it, with no "load" feeling on the engine. my mechanic wont get to look at it until monday, but I hope i didnt destroy the valves and crap. He also said i couldnt damage it further by trying to start it, since the belt already snapped and if it was already snapped it wouldnt turn the pistons and stuff over.

if i was at a complete stop, is it pretty safe to say there isnt serious damage? my boss said I would of "heard" a loud pop, or snap or bang or something, but i had my stereo turned up.

what do you guys think? did i ruin the porkchop, or because there wasnt a load on the engine, and i was stopped, that I MAY be ok???

thanks!

bent valves...since youll have the head off, i would have them all checked out at a machine shop- put the valves in that you need, and maybe get a valve job. have them check the guides while your at it, and buy some guide seals while its apart anyway...

your mechanic is dumb, when you try to start it, your pistons are moving, considering it is turning your crank, what isnt moving are the valves because the cam isnt moving, but i guarantee 1 or more likely more moved when you trid to start it, and when it failed, im gonna guess 3 are bent.

Get a used head (100-150), send to machine shop for valve job, seals and resurfacing (100), and replace head in one day (gasket set and timing belt 120) if you do your own labor.

Send to a shop, $1500.

If you do it yourself, you will get a completely redone head for $350 with all new seals. Not a bad deal.

Might just be when the photo was taken, but I wouldn't think 'all new valves' would be black on the cylinder facing side..

Ha!

VERY rare that you don't bend'em. Have your head done. then you know what you've got. My guy here does them for about $250. Takes him no time at all, even with guides and a race grind. Make sure you do good belt maintenance this time. Unless... you like pulling heads.

Where did your "mechanic" get his license.....pep boys?

I agree with the others...get your head redone. But, FIRST, get a new mechanic who knows what he's talking about and has worked on these cars before.

the auction states that a valve job was done. which it has been. you can tell my the shiney surface where the valve sits against the head. the tops of the valves (the side facing away from the pistons) are also grind down to make smooth contact with the head. so just because the valves are dirty doesnt mean the head wont have perfect compression.

but like the others said... i would have yours redone. that way you at least know there are no past problems with all the other things in the head. (guides, springs, other little things in the head.) because if you think about it... why would anyone have that work done to a head then just put it on ebay? unless something was wrong with it. on the other hand they might have realized that it wouldnt make any money without the valve job.

then drop it all off at a machine shop and they will probably do the whole thing for.... i would say between 150 and 200 if they are an honest shop.

Actually, his mechanic isn't dumb and is correct about doing no additional damage than what has been done by the belt breaking. The valves that were in the way when the cam stopped moving, are bent period. It's not like you can bend them more. The ones that were not in the way, are not bent, and they aren't going to get in the way since the cam isn't moving.

That is too bad, however, the fix is not THAT bad. Both routes (getting a second head - recondition and swap, or re-do your own) have plusses and should lead to a good result. Time to think about what other work you might want to do.... ahh, the slippery slope!

In the meantime, for the benefit of all (to learn and add another data point), do you know what the mileage/time was on the belt? Also, the brand of belt, if known, would be of interest.
