Default Ground control coilovers not fitting

Anybody else ever have this problem? I searched but found no threads on it. I have the black boge/sachs super shocks or whatever they're calling them these days and the aluminum adjustable collar that goes over the stut housing doesn't fit over the top seal piece for the shock. It looks like it would be a tight sqeeze but would still fit on the strut body itself if I could get it past that top part. Does anyone know if that is a PIA to get off, or if its even supposed to come off? Thanks for any advice!

Pics..?
I wanted ground controls myself, but just went for OEM boge and lowering springs.
I just changed mine not too long ago. I could probably help you out if I could see in my head what you are talkin about.

Thanks

I have the early struts with screw tops. I unscrewed the top and put the collar on.
