Default Hatch de-fogger... WTF?

Hokay... on the 924S, the hatch defogger is not working. I left it on for the entire 30 minute drive to work, and no dice... it eventually melted the snow (yes, I brushed it off...) that was left because the cabin was warm...

So, today, I decided I'd utilize the trusty multi-meter and see what was going on. I checked voltage across each wire, as well as across the circuit as a whole, and each one is fine... through the entire test, there was snow on the hatch, (a dusting) and it wasn't melting... I was pulling 14 V across it.

any ideas what the problem is? the 924S is my winter car right now, and I kinda need this to work... and I'm stumped.

Thanks!

Did you check hte contacts to the hatch glass? My defroster isnt working either and its because those little contacts have broke off.

I have the same issue on my '86 944. Contacts are firmly in place, but the defogger still doesn't work. The light comes on, and the driver's side heated mirror works (passenger's side doesn't work, but is there even one on the passenger side?).

I am stumped! What can I do about it?

The actual defroster lines in the rear window may be breaking down and not producing enough heat.

Is there a way to replace these lines?

I'd expect this to be a very common issue if this were an age problem. (Do the rest of these 944 owners have the same problems, or are they too busy driving to care? )

They sell conductive paint for repairing broken lines at AutoZone, NAPA, Checker etc.

But first I'd verify there is actual voltage at the connector, and that the ground (which on my car at least is thru the hatch strut) is intact.

Well, I just bought the car, but the previous owner has records showing that he just had the rear struts replaced. I see that they do have the correct electrical connectors on them. I will have to test the actual voltage.

yeah... I sold the car...

HOWEVER, I did stumble across the problem when I was tracing an electrical issue that killed the clock, dome light, and stereo... the wiring for the defogger switch, at the switch, was crispy and burned. the insulation had melted off the wires. Good luck, hope this helps!

Hatch defrosters pull more amps than anything else on the whole car. Switch/relays/ground etc. should be in good working order or you can fry stuff.
