Filling the darn cooling system...?
Ok, well my oil leak is gone... for now, after resealing the BS housings. My own dumb fault for not using enough sealant.
Now thats gone, and I am "trying" to fill my cooling system. Heres what I did...
Im pretty certain I followed clarks steps here...
I jacked the front of the car up
Turned the heater all the way up and hit the fan to 4.
I left the bleeder open until I saw a stream.
Then the thermo popped open, the fans kicked on, and the stream went away. (As I expected)
The car got up to N.O.T. and the coolant level went down a little.
I let it idle for a little while but the bleeder would only bubble... I couldnt get another steady stream.
Now I did just rebuild it, and it makes me sad that I have to let it idle, so I just threw the bleeder back in.
The car stayed at NOT but the heater only got mild.
What did I do wrong? Did I maybe jack it up too high?
Other than that the car seems to be running great. I need a new starter (I always have, but its now being a jerk) and then I have to throw my fiberwerks bumper on and it should be good....

is your heater turned all the way to hot? That would open the coolant valve all the way. Also- i thought you were supposed to jack the ps up all the way so the bleeder was higher than everything else when you bleed it..... I always do it just flat and never had a problem but ive seen some that were completely stubborn.

I too have always had success bleeding it on the level. The low heat could be a flap/control problem, or perhaps the coolant valve not opening all the way; hopefully not a plugged heater core . I'm not sure how they do the heater ocntrols on the post-85 cars.

I went to Autozone and rented a pressure tester. I used this to then pressure bleed the system after my hose replacement, and re-fill. It worked like a charm, and you get your money back when you return the tester.

Yeah, the pressure tester method works pretty well. Did you try topping off the block first using the hose coming off the cylinder head, then filling up the rest of the cooling system using the reservoir opening? I didn't have to do that myself when I drained my engine, but there's a note about it on Clark's, so I guess there are others who have had trouble getting coolant to flow in there.

To me it sounds as you had the car jacked up to far. the system is designed for the car to be level.
I have always used the pressure tester w/ car level , and have never had a problem

Yea me too, you guys are making this way too hard....
1) open bleeder
2) fill coolant to top of resevoir
3) apply some sort of compressed air to filler neck (just enough to move the coolant into the engine)
4) see coolant come out of bleeder, close bleeder, close resevoir.
5) drive.
