Won't start
I pulled the car from around the side yard to the driveway, and it was stumbling and running like crap.
I drove about 100 feet, then shut it off and now it's in the driveway and won't start again. It cranks fine, then it's like it tries to catch, the engine slows for a revolution and it does this all over again. It has plenty of voltage, so I'm guessing the fuel isn't there.
It's been stumbling for quite a while (over a year). Would this be a fuel pump that was getting weak and finally went out?

MORE DETAILS:
it sounds like when I pulled the ignition fues, except when it does the slow revolution, it almost is like it backfires.
If I remember right, the fuel pump can usually be heard when you turn the key to the on position (I always do that first cause I'm used to the diesel), but I'm hearing nothing.

I dont know about everyone else, but I can't hear mine.
I used to have a stumble/stall problem (and its an auto... yeah... an auto stalling always looks cool)...
Anyway... mine was running way too rich, and it went away when I replaced the Fuel pressure reg.
I dont think that will help you too much... but no one else responded
LOL Sorry.

It well may be a fuel issue... maybe a leaky injector or a FPR issue... I was thinking of that. It may be flooded, so I'll go over there and try it a little later.
It's a weird stumble in that it's worse in humid weather, and it was VERY humid when I started it. Maybe if I let it dry out it'll be ok.

My fuel pump turns on when I switch the ignition to on. Is it not supposed to?

It's probably about time for the plugs, but I will say that I changed them before when the car was like this and it didn't help.
Is there a seperate injector for more fuel on the start? If so, maybe that one is leaking.
I'm pretty sure this would be a fuel issue - all plugs have spark, and as far as I know I haven't sucked a hampster in the intake or anything, so there's air...

Sounds like the flywheel sensors and/or connections to them (engine speed and refrence sensors on the top of the bellhousing) I just went through this on my '84.
If the sensors don't give the DME the correct signal, the igition timing is off - you'll still get a spark, it'll just be at the wrong time (way advanced)
Try this - hold wide open throttle while you crank it, it should start after 15-20 seconds, and possibly run very rough, belching black smoke (unburned gas), but kepp holding the throttle open. As the engine picks up speed, right around 3-4k rpms, it'll smooth out and seem like it's running normal as the engine speed gets closer to the default timing signal.
I think the refrence sensor is the culprit, but I ended up having to replace both of them because the connectors disintegrated as I took them apart. The plastic was so brittle it just crumbled.
If you shop around, you should be able to find a generic Bosch or equivalent sensor for around $80. Unfortunately, you may need two...

That sounds like it exactly. When it does start, it's rough, but when I Rev it, the higher up in RPMs I rev, the better it runs.
Ok, so how hard is this to change? do I go in from the top or bottom?
Also, where can I get these parts? anyone have a link for a decent, yet cheap one online? I see the reference sensor (is that the right part?) for $179 at pelican: http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/...606-115-00-M14

Still called reference sensors for the M3 I'm assuming, and what year?
The ones for the E30? (86-91 for $68?)
I'm looking at the top one on this page:

If that's right and you just saved me $100/sensor, I'll send you a cookie!
