Front Rear Speakers only work with radio, not cd
I took my panasonic cd player out of my BMW and installed it into the audi. Prior to removal, it worked flawlessly. After installation, the front and rear speakers only work with the radio. Only the front speakers work with the cd or auxillary input functions.
Don't want to ask a question I already know the answer to, but is there any way that the cause of this is wiring (or something else), and not the headunit itself?
Thanks!

If it works fine with the radio, then it can't be wiring outside the HU. Check all your settings, maybe?
I once had some strange symptoms like this with a Blaupunkt head unit that had a cell-phone mute input. The cover came off the input during installation and was shorting to ground and making the HU do some very weird stuff (haunted car?). My point is just that you may want to pull it and check out all the control wiring, check fuses, etc.

I am having the same thing happen. My brother had a sony cd player that worked fine in his beretta. He got something else and I got this unit from him and put it in my Dakota. When the radio is on front and back speakers work, but with a CD only the front speakers work. I used a wiring harness that goes directly from the stock harness on the truck to the back of the radio so there is zero wire splicing. I have no idea what is up.

What I'm going to do is buy a similar Panasonic headunit (same wiring harness) and try to plug it in. If it works properly I'm just going to break down and buy a new head unit. I can't get by just listening to the 4" speakers up front when there are 6.5" components in the rear. I hate this BS, since the stereo is only 9 months old and cost $300 originally.
Of course, this is the least of my worries since my E30's oil pan lost the battle against a big rock on the road last night...

I took the sony radio out of my 944 and put it in the Dakota using all the same wiring and it worked the same way not using the rear speakers on CD setting, (but works fine in the Porsche). I guess that means it has to be the wiring and not the head unit but I dont know why it would work on radio and not CD.

Figured it out - most modern head units have 2 blue wires: power antennae and amplifier. The BMW had a power antennae (the Audi doesn't) and I reused that wire instead of the amplifier wire.
Since you have the same exact problem sythik, I suggest you look into this very easy fix.

First: The 944 has one power antenna, not multiple antennae.
Second: The last post to this thread was just over 12 years ago.
