Default Oil Sump question (searched)

Just for clarification (and at the risk of taking one in the jibs), when I change the oil on my 944 I am draining it from the sump. There is no oil drain plug on the block. The drain on the block is for coolant.

DBorror, you are correct. The only one you want is on the oil pan. And it is a 15mm.

Thanks! People seem to use "sump" and "oil pan" interchangeably. Just wanted to make sure I knew exactly what folks were talking about. There is another "plug-like thing" on the right side of my block that seems to have oil collecting on it. What is that then? I thought it was some sort of drain plug? Here is a picture of what I am talking about.

I imagine that it is not good that there is oil dripping from it?

Do not drain the oil from the OPRV... holy moses... leave that thing alone! That's the oil cooler housing with the oil pressure sender. You're going to want to look on the same side of the car, lower, and back about a foot...

Why is it leaking and how does it tighten? Could it just be loose?

Check the torque specs for the oil pressure relief valve plug( 45 nm) and retorque it. If that thing blows you'll be in trouble.

Will do. Does that thing have a crush washer like the oil plug?

There is a crush washer on the regulator valve, replace it and torque if thats where its leaking from.

It could be your oil sender or even your oil filter leaking. Once you pull your oil filter when you change your oil you will have a better look at everything down there from the top of the engine. Make sure you use a Mahle filter and not a generic filter when you do your oil. I would clean it up real good with carburator cleaner and give it a week then check it again to figure out where it is leaking from. Could even be the comming from the cam tower.
