Default Rear Cam Gasket

Well I have to replace the rear cam gasket this week before the burning oil smell kills me! Any opinions on using any sealant on the cork gasket? Old school form-a-gasket or RTV or nothing???

It's a cork seal - goes on dry.

Thanks...I suspected so. I so look forward to puttng it in!! Found the leak while doing the front seals when I was taking the flywheel lock off. I actually had an oil sleeve seal go after only 32K miles. It looks like it hardened up like rock. Never had one do that before. Somebody sell me a cheap part perhaps???

Those bolts should be torqued at 6 ft/lbs i believe

I slightly over did mine, and now it leaks, but no biggie, i have another one and will go in in a few days.

Those 3 little 10mm bolts are notorious for working themselves loose. If you don't loctite 'em, plan on reaching back there to give 'em a twist a couple of times a year.

That part of the engine must be subject to a strange bit of vibration frequency.

Any tricks to accessing these bolts? I had trouble getting a wrench back there.

I'm going to replace it tonight...in looking back there I think a quarter inch ratchet should do the trick, but I'll let you know how it works out.

Now how to set my hand to 6 ft-lbs?????

An angled gearwrench works great on all 3 of them. Personally I used a very thin layer of Locktite 574 on both sides of the gasket after the last gasket dried out in less than a year...seems to have held up well so far. Next time I'm going to just cut my own from non-asbestos gasket material...cork is the wrong product for that spot.

You know I think I'll scan the cork gasket before I put it in...so if it does leak I'll have a template!

Well I finally got around to replacing the gasket. Forget using the 1/4 inch ratchet! I ended up using a little 10 mm wrench from my little set of "ignition" wrenches. Yea, remember the days of points and condensers??? 8^)

All the bolts were pretty loose...and the gasket was obviously the original and was pretty much shot. Really wasn't that bad a job...snugged up the bolts (with some medium strength loctite) and Voila! No more leakage, smoke or smell!!

Patience!

Personally, I'd rather pull the camtower than fight that small job for an hour.
