Default 968 Exhaust Options

Looking for a good stainless exhaust for 95 968. My Father in law just bought the car, but he and I agree it is a bit too quiet.

We need some sound, maybe a nice looking tip too, not too obnoxious, but it really needs to growl a bit more.

What good street leagal exhausts are available for these cars, who sells them?

I think there is a Billy Boat exhaust available on Automotion(?). is there anything else?

you could take it to a muffler shop and have them cut out the resonator and put in a straight pipe. the resonators in these exhausts are very restrictive.

another option to get a bit more sound is to remove the stock airbox and put a cone air filter on. you get much more of a growl when the revs pick up.

and there is no need to cut holes in the stock airbox like some may recommend. the area of the factory inlet to the airbox (snorkel removed) is equivalent to the area of the MAF opening.

My neighbor did the above and added a new Magnaflow twin pipe muffler to the back and he is most happy with sound and feel. I haven't seem him around, but if I do, I will ask and maybe snap some pics.

Cone type filter in the 968 has been dyno tested here at our shop. It loses power to much hot air.

Doing the air box mod improves the sound at WOT (like flipping the air cleaner cover on 350Chevy) + from every thing I’ve read it adds HP (maybe up to 10hp)

+1 on the quiet exhaust, my (new to me) 93 is way to quiet for my liking. I put a "stock" set up from Automotion.com on my 79 924 and it improved the sound allot (not to loud but more aggressive). My plan for the 968 (from everything I’ve read) is RSBarns exhaust and stage 1 chip (maybe stage 2)

I've tested the temp difference. The air in that space drops to ambient temp as soon as the car begins to move. The air temp in the stock air box is no cooler than that passing thru a cone air filter. The hot air theory may hold true on the dyno, but it is not applicable to real world driving.

I have tried all three airbox setups. I had a stock airbox when I first drove my car in February. Then I put in a cone in March, and it sounded really cool. I don't know if it added power, maybe a small little kick, but it added to my tendency to drive fast. Then in April I put my airbox back and cut 2 2" holes in it. The modded airbox has about 60% of the sound of the cone, and little or no power increase.

I think filter mods are just for sound.

I have a Borla muffler (not sure of model) on my S2. From where I sit (usually inside the car), its a bit droney and sounds like a boat with a low burble. From what people outside the car say is that it has a very nice sound and is in fact moderately loud. After seeing the rsbarn test pipe, I think I'll order it to free the flow, and if that still doesn't get me the crisp edgyness I think a high performance car should have, I'll take alternate measures.

You could also try a Billy Boat exhaust (B&B). I have a system that was made at a very good local exhaust shop-a 100 cell cat to a flowmaster 50 series and a nice chrome tip-cost about $400 and isn't too loud. Good luck!

Speedforce Racing makes one for the 3 Liter, but it's a bit loud for a daily driver. Mine on the 84 sets off car alarms... it does have the most amazing growl though, and uses the Borla XR-1 Muffler.

I had a magnaflow before this, and it actually sounded pretty ricey on the stock pipes.

Do 944's also have the restrictive resonator?

I wouldn't mind a little bit of aggressiveness to my exhaust note as long as it doesn't sound cheap.
