If the engine is out - you can do that.

If the engine is in the car - a home made slide hammer works like a charm.

That's interesting, the early bellhousing on my 83 had no hole, just a pocket from the inside. That shaft has been cursed at many times here. Mine came out easy probably because it's always been a dry California car with no road salts. You guys in the Midwest and back east are always breaking off bolts due to corrosion issues. Maybe that's the only good thing about living here! That was great of him to come over and help, that's what rennlist is all about.

I'm really starting to dread doing that job in my car. FL car until '99, but I've driven it the past 2 winters. Should be great for corroded bolts.

awwwww, schucks

Really glad I could help. Sometimes all it takes is a fresh pair of eyes.

Yes, there's an access hole at the other end of the pin in the Bell housing. When the motor is in the car its not accessable. Using the long punch you can "pursuade" it from the inside. You just have to be careful of the stop pin that keeps the it from sliding in too far. A little spray of the "secret" oil and some taps on the punch and she broke free.

In all honesty, the clutch is not really a difficult job to do, its just time consuming. With the motor in the car there is so many related things you need to do first in order to get to it. That and there are two or three special tools you need, sockets mainly.

Just clean the pin up and polish it lightly with some #0000 steel wool. You want to make sure there's no burrs on the leading tapered edge that will snag the new needle bearings you put in the clutch fork. (You are puttting new bearings in right? )
