Did the NA's come with foam under the shift boot? I am undoing the POs crappy shift **** installation and found a lump of foam under the rubber boot that goes under the leather boot.

 

Yep, there from the factory. Mine was dryrotted and nasty, I threw it out. Haven't noticed any additional noise/heat as a result, but my car is a little noisy anyway so I may not be a good example to follow.

 

Yeah there should be one there. If you want a new one 944online.com sells this item, but IMO its a little pricey for a piece of foam. I think its like $65 dollars or around there.

 

Unless you are doing a clutch job replacing a completely rotted rubber plug section is not easy. You could probably accomplish the same thing by using expanding aerosol foam in the cavity with a form (beer can) around the shifter to keep it out of the lever mounting area. I noticed a major difference on the NA when I replaced my dry-rotted old plug. Much less heat, shifter vibration, and noise. YMMV

 

i think i am just going to gently stuff it back in.

i am noticing a rattling like marbles between shifts. It has a new spring centered clutch. my rx7 convert made a similar sound when I took my foot off the clutch and a wrench said it was normal. i got a few other squeaks and rattles to take care of too. it's no wonder why my brother didnt like the car.

 

I had taken mine out because it was rotten, and it made in noticably louder. I suppose that could be contributed to how noisy your torque tube bearings are as well. I finally put another one back in, but I actually had to cut it in half and put it in in two big pieces to get it in place.

 

Anyone have a picture of the foam before it deteriorated? or the proper name of the part?

is it just a cone like in the picture? got this link from google. If a cone would it be too difficult to make one myself out of a dense piece of foam (like what they give after getting carpal tunnel surgery ).

I have excessive heat around the shifter in an automatic.

Would this solve same issue or am I missing a heat shield?

Not sure if this helps temporarily.... but i bought one of those cheapy foam sponges shaped like a big peanut for washing cars, slit a small hole in it, and stuffed it down there. Worked nicely until I could take the TT out for replacement (main reason was to replace clutch discs).

 

part 8 is on the transmission. part 6 is shaped like a cone. is it 8 or 6? when i lifted the boot on my way to the train this morning it looked like it was shaped like a cone.

the peanut sponge, just jab a hole through the middle and lay it flat? autozone has the peanut sponges on sale two for the price of one.

i may stop by this evening to pick up another case of windshield solvent at .99 a gallon.

 

Part #6 in the pic is a rubber boot, #8 is the formed foam boot. You asked if there was foam under the shift boot in your 1st post. The answer is yes, and there is also that rubber boot that helps seal even more heat and sound out. Having the foam one is the critical one if want to have a liveable cockpit. Without the foam section exhaust fumes can easily enter the cab from small exhaust leaks. I'd say the peanut idea is "spongeworthy'

now i think it is making sense.

when i lifted up the rubber boot #8 a piece of foam was sticking up. am i correct to assume it goes around the opening/is shaped more like a donut (yumm) than a cone?

Maybe i can stuff it back where it came from with a little adhesive. or use a peanut sponge.

 

Now you got it. The foam piece sits against the underside of the TT tunnel. It's neck is supposed to fill in and overlap the cutout in the interior tunnel where the shifter goes through and attaches with that plate. If the foam has broken away at the edge of the lip you can try gluing it and see if it holds. I would be careful about stuffing too much in there, it will make getting into reverse harder. All the rubber boot does is seal around the top of that metal lip area. The rubber boot usually tears from the heat but it's a vital part in keeping heat out and noise out.
