Default what is the purpose of this clip?

http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/hvac-01.htm
Under section: Full Heat at All Temperature Settings (1985.5 and Newer 944s)

My clip broke off and the dealer will take too long to order the piece. I'm going to make my own clip while I wait so I can continue troubleshooting. Is the purpose of this clip to hold the threaded rod down to the 'golden' metal base?

Can someone explain to me how the metal rod works (linkage) (with respect to the heating system?). If I attach it to the metal base will this cause any issues, or does the plastic clip have some sort of special functionality?

Thx

The threaded rod snaps into a plastic holder and the metal clip fits over the plastic holder to keep the rod from popping out. I think you can probably get by temporarily without the metal clip.

The rod needs to be held in a particular position to allow the full range of temperature control through the linkage. That's the purpose of the plastic clip.

Yes. When the plastic holder breaks, the linkage slides by itself to the full "hot" position. It happened to me just this past summer.

Common problem and most likely the only time you'll be able to fix a major issue for < $2.00

Yes,
The replacment that I found is a better product and I bought it the dealership.
Kind of a pain in the *** to replace but well worth it! cost like $3-4 get 2 just in case I have an extra.

BTW, I was able to zip-tie mine as a temporary fix until I got the clip.

Zip tie held it for me, too.

I think they figure that if you're in a cold place in the winter and the clip breaks, failing to full heat is better than failing the other way. Easy fix...take a look at 944online for the clip if the dealer doesn't have it.

I should add that the PO had spent $1,500+ on A/C work at a reputable shop and was never able to get it to blow cold. She's a friend of mine and I could never bring my self to tell her that I fixed it with a Zip-tie...

Can someone tell me if the 2nd rod in my pictures looks normal?
I noticed that the 2nd rod does not have any form/type of clip...but the first picture looks fine. I just posed the pics,,, they are just above

Here is the original rod that most people usually have the clip fall off from...this one looks normal to me:

Just want to make sure that the first pic (single rod) is supposed to look like that (with no clip)

Ya, I figure its just the main one which requires the pin/clip

Is it normal for just a tad/bit of air not hot and not cold, to come out from the vents when the Heating/Cooling is off completely?
