I just got in the car, was getting prepped to go for a moonlite drive, put up the sunroof and a horrible popping and grinding noise started. Then chunks of plastic fell out. Anyone want to guess what happened?

You didn't check the sunroof timing belt tension did you? It has to be checked every 15K miles. The sunroof on these cars is an interference design, and when the belt gets loose, it can skip a few teeth and all havoc occurrs. The little chunks of plastic are probably all that is left of the sunroof valves, after the sunroof pistons slammed into them and rendered them useless. Whatever you do, don't try to open it again, you'll just destroy more sunroof valves.

tifo - you made me cry I was laughing so hard - possibly the funniest thing I have ever seen/read on rennlist.......

EDIT - is there a $1,000,000,000 tensioning tool that is hard to use and easily broken available for this belt?

Sunroof belts...thats funny.

The gears are cheap, and if you don't fix what broke your current ones, they will strip again. I went through three of them until I finally found the problem. Price in link below.
