Whats involved in converting to manual? Im sick of fixing the stupidly designed factory one.

pull the old stuff, take the lifting mechanism out from under the headliner, pop manual roof in and go. maybe add a little rubber or something to the metal on the roof to make the latches latch down tighter. besides that, thats all it takes.

Just get a sunroof from an early car and put it in. Mine is from an 83 and fits fine.

Sorry I should have been more specific. Was the donor 83 sunroof an electric or manual that you used?

I believe manual but haven't taken it apart to see. Since it's in an 87 car even if it were electric the lifting arms wouldn't fit on it anyway.

That's why I was asking. There's nothing to take apart to check, just see if it has a larger depression for your head in the recessed area than the electric liner. I know the exterior sizes are the same. When you said it fit I assumed you meant it also 'worked 'with the 87 electrics and it didn't make sense to me. The early manual sunroofs are great for the conversions on later cars, the latches lay flat and are centered on the liner panel, not cockeyed like on an electric liner panel.

You think you have sunroof problems? Try having a 928, there the dumb sunroof slides into the car instead of popping out. This means you have those stupid metal tracks to worry about in addition to the other stuff. And when the sunroof breaks, you're stuck with half of the roof open. And to top things off, the manual crank feature is retarted.

The 944 manual crank involves that little metal wrench which is attached to the body near the sunroof motor (makes sense). EVEN if you are unfortunate enough to be lacking this tool, you can use a regular wrench or socket to crank the sunroof shut. Even if you have trouble doing that, it's not a big deal driving in the rain with the sunroof propped up. With the 928, the special cranking tool is kept in the glove box, and is often missing (as mine was), and there is no way to crank the sunroof motor without it. The best you can do is to grab the motor's shaft with your fingers and twist it. This is very slow, very painful, and very ridiculous.

I like 944s.
