climate control LED install?
Hello Rennlisters-
I've got reverse indiglo gauges (nice pleasant blue lighting) and an alpine headunit (also nice pleasant blue lighting).. and a climate control unit with ugly orange illumination. I was wondering if anyone can point me at a link for the procedure to install LEDs into the climate control unit. Perry951 had one as I understand, but his LED page is now 404. I appreciate the help guys-

I don't know the "official" way of doing it, but I've just finished replacing some of the regular bulbs in my climate control unit, so I can tell you how to do that.
Basically once you get the unit all pulled apart there are 6 bulbs that are soldered in place inside the switches, and then 3 more bulbs that are either soldered or plugged into the circuit board (depends if you have a control unit with the removable switches or the one thats soldered together).
I would assume all you have to do it replace all the bulbs with 12v led's of your color choice. Soldering the leds in place of the bulbs is really easy - when I replaced the regular bulb in mine I didn't have to add any solder or anything. I think the hardest part for replacing the bulbs will be to find an led that will work with the fan speed ****, because the bulb inside the **** has the wires angled oddly. I'm sure it is just a matter of bending the led connectors in the correct direction, but still harder than soldering in the rest of the leds.
Lucky for you I was bored off my *** tonight and have a good techno stream going, so I took pics of my currently dis-assembled control unit and made a little page for you.

It's funny - I've always liked amber and I hate modern stereos with all the blue lights. To each their own, I suppose.
What did you do about the amber digital clock?

bill- you are the man, that is AWESOME, thanks a mil bro
david- they were one of the first things i got and i still love them- i picked them up off ebay about 3 years ago, there was a glut of them for sale and i don't think they were any more than $40-45
arash- the amber light on the clock has been burned out for awhile, so no illumination is better than the wrong color illumination, lol

I have a blaupunkt los angeles MP74 head unit, and I just made the colors on the buttons match the weird orange.
And I have the screen on the HU blue to match my reverse glow gauges.

Eventually I'll put some finishing details on that write-up and put it up on my website, which is another project I have to do. I'll probably do one for fixing the a/c buttons while I'm at it (have a bunch of those parts on the desk in front of me as well).

As for the clock, go to www.lsdiodes.com and pick up some of the s-flux 4 pin LED's. They have VERY wide viewing angles and if positioned properly make suitable replacements (with a resistor as well of course) for the bulb in the clock. Mine burned out so I build a LED replacement. Now I have a blue illuminated clock. I as well was looking at changing the ones in my climate control, but since the trim piece is intact and the tabs aren't broken I just might leave it for now

Billthe3 - Thanks for the great write-up!
I bought my red instrument led lights from Flamingeye Very high quality stuff, easy and perfect install, I couldn't be happier. They're based in the UK but shipping was reasonable and I think it took <10 days to get here.
