Strange Kaleidoscope of smells
OK-
I need some help tracking this down. One day car smells like cat ****, next day BO, next day dog turd, next day "old book" smell.
Things I have done-
Smelled air coming from vents (smells "cold", not stinky)
Checked hatch carpet (smells dusty)
Checked rear passenger carpet (for pooling water/damp from possible battery tray leak)
Removed seats (checked for spills, something forgotten under the seats)
Checked spare tire well and cargo space for standing water
What is throwing me is that it smells different every day. I thought someone was playing a joke on me by putting something on/in the fresh air intake, but nothing is there and the smell goes away when running the blower pulling in air from outside.
Any guesses?
No I do not have cats, the car is kept in a garage at night and this is driving me crazy!!!!!

Does your car sit out in the sun during the day? Could be heating up any kind of cleaners that you may have used on the interior. That might put out some weird smells.

I was thinking it was something getting wet and getting warm enough to "grow" things, I was hoping someone would have some 'doesn't make sense' tip [like holes in the battery tray for a wet passenger side rear carpet].

Does it return once the blower is off? Check in your doors man... something may have made a home in the door vents... eek, hate to think you have some sort of reptile in there from the desert.

Swifty-
I did have some water in one of the back cubbies at one time thanks to a plugged drainpipe, and that was one of the first places I checked........
75ohm-
It is in the car when I first get into it and it goes away once I start the AC. It does not come back immediately, but after it sits for a few hours....yuk....
I will check the inside of the doors this weekend- I had not thought of that....
and I promise to stay out of the Filiberto's drive thru Joe!...

i had a mouse(s) set up shop in my glove box, wow that was bad. and the new smell i believe is water under the carpet im not sure where in the hell it is coming from but whenever u take off or hit the brakes you can hear and see the water coming and going. its not my car anymore so i could give a sh*t. but i do think that there is some mold going on under the carpet. shouldnt be i tore all the seats out and carpet and cleaned everything up.
but u said theres was no water in the cabin area so i dont know.
where was the car previosly?
I.E. - my brothers truck came from alaska, so i got a sh*tload of volcanic dust in the vents, got a uniqe oder and never goes away.
with my 44 i dont have to worry about smells, it has the same smell no matter what. OIL

This has been a desert car its whole life (NM, AZ). The carpet in the back seat is feeling a little crunchy (compared to the front) and does feel like it is not glued down now that I think about it. I checked/tested the sunroof tubes when I got home from work today. No wet in the interior and it looked like all the water flowed out properly.
Phooey......

ok so you dont have cats, and its kept int the garage. all closed up? do your neighbors have and cats/dogs, other odor causing critters. i had my truck in the garage and i had that baby locked down like fort knox. but mice managed to get in and into my truck. with the 44 i usually dont put the sunroof back on when i get home. my cat likes to take a nap in the cargo area. and....u dont sleep in your car.....?
