My stock waterpump had a oring with a groove in it that the thermostat fit inside of. The new thermostat came with a think oring and no slic in it. I put the oring in place, then the thermostat, then the washer type thing and I can't compress the oring enough to get the clip in. Did they send me the wrong oring?

My most recent thermostat came the same way.
I re-used the sealing ring from the previous thermostat and continued on my merry little way. Basically the use of the thick O-ring depends on what style of water pump you have. IMO they should ship thermostats with the sealing rings as well, but for some reason they don't.

It was a while ago, but IIRC I forgot to install the O-ring when I put the damn ring back in place. Finaly got it seated, and then saw the ring and promplty said F***-it. When I squeeze the coolant hose I can hear is move back and forth ever so slightly, other than that, no ill effects!
