Default 1987 944-Failed Virginia Emissions Test

I took my 87 944 in for Virginia Emissions testing and it failed the test at 15mph. It passed the idle and 25 mph. I got the car from my mom, who lives in an area that does not require emissions testing. I was running regular 87 octane, and my mom suggested I run that all out and fill up with a good quality high octane. She said that during her time with the car (18 years), it sometimes ran rough in the summer and high octane fixed it. Any ideas out there? Thanks for any replies or advice.

put some 91-at least- in there and get it good and warmed up- 30minute drive- before going to get the car tested, to warm up the cat. converter.

Give her a treat of a tank of premium on top of a bottle of techron concentrate. Drive it like you stole it for that one tank. Change the oil, refill with premium, and then do exactly what Dan said, get it nice and warm first, and you'll be in good shape.

It's all about the Italian tune up

Replace the O2 sensor and take the car to a shop to have the cat checked. Do a tune up and run some Lucas fuel cleaner to clean up the injectors. Then, take it in and see what happens.

The computer that does the test requires the car to be at a certain RPM. A buddy of mine is a state inspector and let me play around with the emissions tester while he was doing my 924. If you go outside the RPM window you have to restart the test. IIRC he did mine in 1st for the 15 and 2nd for 25. Id send you to him but he can only help if you fail the visual test.

What part of the 15mph test did you fail?

Make sure you change the oil after running any sort of detergent additive through your system. Think of it this way - what you are trying to break loose are any deposits that have stuck to the walls of your fuel system, injectors, and valves. When this buildup breaks loose, some may burn in the combustion chamber, but the rest is whisked away by your oil.

Not something you want to leave in there... so after you run her hard for that tank, make sure to replace that dirty oil with some new juice.

Is this the Sunoco in Oakton. I need an emissions test on my car also. Since its new to VA, I figure I got to a station that knows 944. Any particular person to see?

Mine failed the first time at a shell station. Then

Called the guy in the Oakton Sunoco, he sounded pretty lame and told me to take it to the dealer.

So, I took it to a Fairfax Service Center in Merrifield. They did the test again, this time running the engine for a while and passed.
