When I replaced my front right bearing it didn't seat it quite right and causes a humming at ~40 and a vibration at ~65. The bearing has no play in it at all, but I don't think it's completely straight. I'm 99% positive that the problems are with a slightly offset bearing since they both started right after my (sloppy) bearing change. You could have the same problem?

Check your e-brake line to your back wheels.

My S2 started a humming like sound that I couldn't figure out, then I noticed a black line on the wheel. Seems that the cable line would work it's way over to the wheel and just barely touch it over bumps and while accelerating.

Ok. I took it to the dealership, and had them help diagnose it, because I tried taking the front left out, cleaning, inspecting the bearing and the race, re-packing, and re-installing... and again, no dice.

they took a look at it, and determined it was probably coming from the right front, and it was probably too tight... offered to fix it for a mere $400.00, which I politely declined after having a mild stroke...

so, I pick it up tomorrow, and I'll be ordering bearings to be installed this weekend. gonna have somewhere press out the races, and install new ones. Thanks for your help guys!

I know in my case it was because I forgot to re-torque the lug nuts after I lowered the car from the jack stands. Had exactly the same characteristics as you describe (hum while driving, more so from a start/stop). I'm sure in your case this isn't it...but just helps confirm that a wheel bearing would sound the same.

I havent read the whole thread...

I'd check the upper strut bearings, they go bad and make all sortsa noises. Also, new ball joints can sometimes cause a bad alignment, I.E. Car got aligned with marginal BJs a while ago, you change em out to tight ones and the settings move around...

If its a constant noise, not road surface or speed dependent than you wanna check the wheel bearings and CVs.

Also, it could be the torque tube bearings (crosses fingers for you that its not) Ive seen them sound fine in neutral and then start humming under load...

I had to read your post 3 times, Jay, till I realized you were talking about Ball Joints... I guess my eye's kinda drawn to that combo of letters? I was having trouble figure out what marginal ones were... LOL

If you're certain it's in the front this won't help, but tranny bearings and pinion gears tend to hum/howl as they are failing.

I'm pretty sure it's in the front... god, I hope it's not the tranny... but if it is, I'll toss a new torque tube in there with it...
