Default Nothing Is More Expensive Than A Cheap Porsche for Dummies

.. On sale now at your local Barnes & Noble!

Just wanted to show proof of how a cheap porsche will become expensive. Don't regret it one bit, it was more for the learning experience. Too early in life to worry about wasting money.

I guess this explains why the car has been so reliable lately....

and this is an INCOMPLETE list, and doesn't even include things like clutches, interior, etc I have gotten from a parts car that I own. And don't forget, NO LABOR, it's all my time. Think of how bad it could've been!
Kaching...

I just sank $60 into a new headlight switch from Sunset. $36 for the switch, $38 to get it here by Monday, since I work second shift and kind of need more than my foglights to see well.

$300 into ref sensors, a new windshield, $100 into gas lines in the back of the car, and Travis' Rennbay headlight harness (excellent job and props to Travis) are on the way also. My bank account is hurting.

I paid 4100 for my car and now I have spent over 1200 in parts/ few tools trying to do the timing belt / seal / pump replacement and I haven't even driven the car yet. I don't even know if I'll be able to do this job right so I may have to spend more.

My 944 cost me $875. Including that cost, I've spent about $4500 on it since I bought it 2 years ago.

My 968 cost me $9900. I've spent $1067.90 on it since I bought it in December 2005.

I think they're both in tip-top shape. When I get disheartened by how much I've spent, I hop in one of them and take it for a joy ride, and it all seems worth it. Money CAN buy happiness...

FWIW, if I had to do it all over again, I would probably have gotten a 944S2 before the 83. Over the years I've found the early cars to be much more maintenance hungry than the later models.

And it's not just due to being older, but rather plain wear and tear from being less thoroughly engineered and some of the quirks not having been resolved as with the later cars.

Granted, back in 1994 when I bought the 83 for $6,000 a 944S2 was untouchable for less than twice as much. At the price of parts these days, however, I think a 944S2 is well worth the extra money for someone looking to get into 944s.

Don't get me wrong, I've really enjoyed my 83 over the years and I find the bare go-kart feel I get when driving it very unique. OTOH, I think it's becomes frustrating for a beginner with these cars to have to deal with all the extra maintenance that was engineered out of the later cars (e.g. Veedub wheel bearings, CV joints, leaking fuel injectors, cracked firewall at the clutch master cylinder, banged up aluminum engine protection pan, etc. YMMV

It's funny... I have my VW Jetta Excel'd as well.... and actually eclipses that total in 6 months of ownership.

Now add labor costs to each of those components if you didn't do the work yourself!!!

I'd love to do a lot of my own work but I don't have the patience, talent, or time to do a lot of it.

dude... don't you know of the 944 folder theory?

Take a folder, put all the receipts in there, take a sharpie, and write on the front of the folder:

"Porsche 944 receipts. DO NOT TALLY!"
