Default Window Switch Woes

Not the usual problem.

Having had a previous 944 with switch problems, I knew all too well the problems and the fixes for the window switches.

So, this latest car has had intermittent problems. You would have to rock the switch back and forth a couple of times to get the window up or down on either side. I have taken them apart, cleaned the contacts etc etc. and then they would work a little better for a while.

The last time it happened, and I cleaned them, and a new symptom appeared. The pass side would only work if you pressed the single switch on the pass door AND the pass side switch on the drivers door. This was for up or down. Then it went down and stayed down

OK, now to the current problem.

I finaly said screw it. Broke down and bought 3 new switches (part # 477 959 622 01C ) I figured I just plug them in a viola, no more 22 year old switch problems.

He77 NO.....

No window action at all on either side.

Fuse (#8) checks OK (I replaced it anyway)

Any ideas? Are there some other fuse/relay/links for the damn windows? I can't beleive both window regulators would crap out together..?

I hate to pull the door panels, but I guess that's the next step to trace this down.......

Allrightythen......

Got the door panel (driver side) off.

Jumped the motor. works good up/down.

Looked at the clarks garage write up. Perhaps the relay is bad. Problem is, I can't figure out which fricking relay it is . I have pulled 3 of them (that aint easy on an early car....)and still haven't got the right one so I can jump 30 and 87.

from Clarks Garage: If the power window relay is bad, neither window will move. So, if the problem is only one one side, the relay is good.
If you suspect that the power window relay is bad, you can remove the relay and jumper terminals 30 and 87 to power the window motors. When you install the jumper, you don't need to turn on the ignition switch to test/operate the power windows. On early 944s, the power window relay is located on the lower left side of the center console near the DME computer. On late model 944s, it's located on the Central Electric Panel (G7).

None of the diagrams show it as a window relay. Anybody..... Bueller....

I put a pic of the window relay in an earlier post:
https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-944-951-968-forum/254933-power-window-question.html
It's up under the dash, between the DME and the console. I believe the one closer to the front of the car is the window relay. The other one that's in the same area is the radio relay.

I found out that my problem was both switches and relay. I replaced all 3 switches and bought a new relay and now my windows work perfectly.

JPK....Thanks for the excellent picture. Found it right away after seeing where the F to look. I DID do a search, but didn't seem to find that pic...

Let's not put all the relays together by the fuse panel..

Anyhow, jumper the 30 and 87. Nada. With or without key.

I did jumper both motors directly to 12 volts and they both go up and down.

So.........I guess I'm on to looking for broken wires in the door(s)

Before you delve TREMENDOUS amounts of time....i would replace that relay. I tested the same as the OP on both switches. Just remember the switches all of to be good and in place for the window circuit to get proper voltage. So if anywhere in the circuit there is a loss of voltage, either from a relay on its way out, a switch with corrosion internally even after a good cleaning, the windows will not move without external power - jumping.

DONE

All windows working, all switches working...

Don't know exactly what I did.

I pulled the relay and jumped 30/87. That worked, windows operated.

Then I cleaned the contacts on the relay, removed the jumper and put the relay back.

Plugged in the 3 new switches.

Everything worked.

Re-assembled the door panel and buttoned her back up, and they STILL work.

Hopefuly this is the last window problems......

Now, if i could just get motivated to tackle the A/C or oil leak.
