Default S2 engine in a 88 944S

Can someone explain the procedure in swapping an S2 engine into a 1988 944S

what is required to do this?

Pro's and Cons?

i would say yes, do it. if you can get an S2 with all manifolds and dme/wiring harness. I'm not sure if the tranny will hold up. I have seen a couple of people that did the swap and kept the S tranny though, don't know if their is anything extra involved with that.

German Auto Dismantlers (be careful with them if you go this route) has an S2 engine with everything needed for a transplant and were willing to sell the complete package for $2700.

You'll also have to think about what to do about the air filter and may have to work out some wiring harness jigsaw puzzle. I *think* you're fine with the S flywheel (for 16v sensor pickup), but I'm not 100% sure.

FWIW, I grenaded my 944na tranny within 5k miles of a 968 engine transplant.

As for sourcing an engine, I have had positive experience with Parts Heaven (they sold me an engine that needed a head gasket -- so they paid for the repairs ) and have heard only bad reports out of GAD.

The S tranny is stronger than an 8v n/a tranny, but i'm not sure how much stronger.

Good point about the air filter. I'll be creating my own S2 style intake this weekend(keep your eyes open) for my S.

An autocross in the NNJR PCA region had a 968 motor shoe-horned into his 924S. Probably cost him 4 times the cost of a concours condition 968. I'd say he's well over $50k into his 'Frankenrob' project. I will say that the car is smoking fast on the AX course.

Can it be done? Certainly. Is it worth it? Only if you have money you don't mind throwing out the window.

Yea... my replacement S tranny is holding up nicely. Even under track conditions. LSD *might* help -- but that's just a speculation.

Bryan Gunn's webpage seems defunct, but he stuffed a S2 airfilter under the nose panel. IIRC, the website mentions that stock S2 airfilter will not fit under an n/a nose panel, but will fir under a 931 nose panel.

Of course, most people who stuff 3.0l motor just goto an after-market cone filter.

i was just usng the search button.. and read alot.. but i want to clear a few things up..

some people said that the "s" DME will work with the S2 engine.. and i really dont need to change much in the wiring harness.. just a few things.. They made it sound like this swap would be pretty easy.. just about a bolt in and hook up.. with a few minor changes.. and it will work. Is this possible since it is an "s" to "s2" and not a 8v Na to S2?

AFAIK (unlike the 8v to S2 swap) the S and S2 flywheel and AFM are the same. I imagine the knock sensors, temp sensors, etc. are also the same. Both use the ignition amplifier box. Worth a shot. The 8v to S2 swap is more involved as the 8v uses a different flywheel (with twin pickups and a different number of teeth) a different ignition system, different AFM, only one knock sensor, and different alarm wiring, and probably some other stuff.

You'd want to use the S FPR, at least at first. Fuel injectors are the same but I think the S2 uses a 3.8 bar FPR.

You might not get all of the S2's top-end power without the tuned airbox, DME programming, FPR, but the low end torque should be there.

Well having done the above conversion, I can tell you it doesn't take anything close to 50K (more like 5K if you do it yourself). I will agree that the end result is a smoking fast sleeper

It would certainly be cheaper to sell the S and find an S2 to replace it. S2 engines are worth as much as half of a complete s2, in some cases.
