Default Questions about tires for DE

TireRack says you need to heatcycle & shave VictoRacers if you are running them on dry pavement. I heard people talking about this a couple of years ago, since then I also heard that Kumho made improements to their compound such that shaving was no longer required. I checked the Kumho home page, they don't mention shaving for any tires, unless I missed it.. What is the experience of the Rennlisters? Do VictoRacers need to be shaved if they are used in dry coditions?

We've been doing DE for 3+ years, now we would like to try some R compounds and could use some guidence.

You might get more luck over on the racing board. I say just buy them the way they are sans heat-cycling etc...

I never shaved or heat cycled Victoracers when I used them. Most I know did not shave them, but few did heat cycle them.

I do prefer Toyo RA-1's however especially for DE since they last MUCH longer (shaved or not).

For dry, I always order full tread tires shaved. In addition to more consistent handling, the tires should last as long or longer. You see, heat is the enemy of track tires. Full tread tires will tend to overheat due to tread squirm, probably not enough to chunk, but enough to cause small problems.

As for heat cycling, this is good if you don't have time to put an easy heat cycle on the tires before letting them cool thoroughly before using them hard. Again, it's easy to overheat the tires if you buy non-heat-cycled tires.

I never had any problems with Yokohoma A008R's. I'm not sure if they still make them.

Thanks! I've been running second place all season - this was my first victory in my new class (I1-V - Improved 4cyl cars, Veteran class in NNJR class-speak)

I autocross and DE on the same Toyo Proxes RA-1's. The Toyos are flexible enough to allow that. Most R-compound tires are good for either AX or DE/Track, but very few are effective in both venues, IMHO.

Good to see you out there Dan - your time of 50.xxx ain't too shabby! Gotta stop doing that - you're gonna get all the NNJR guys upset!

Gotta get out to a Metro event - maybe this fall...

I am enjoying your events and have met a lot of nice people. As for my time...I wouldn't mind getting some NNJR guys upset though heh heh. This is all for fun though.

Looking forward to getting some of you out by us.
