I can't say if that's the best way or not, but I know of others who've done it that way.

I used model paint to do my centercaps a few years ago - then clearcoated them with a rattle can. The clear eventually turned yellowish with the model paint, but not the rest of the wheel. I would say use Testors clear on top of the Testors color otherwise you will end up with yellow tinted caps.

I use Testors 1144 gold, 1147 black and 1103 red to paint them. Since Testors is an enamel, you should use an enamel clearcoat. Also, I only paint the recessed areas to reduce degradation from road debris. They have been on my 928 for 4+ years and still look good. BTW I polish them before painting.

I went to autozone and got touchup paint. No clearcoat to follow and they still look great 3 yrs later. The bottles even have they're own brushes!

i painted them today(we'll truth be known, i painted 2 & my 10 yr. old daughter painted 2) with testors. i was gonna have the bodyshop clear over the centercaps, is that gonna work. i don't want them to turn yellow, or is that just with the rattlecan clear? pics. coming in the morning.

I used acrylic and the outside seemed to chip off because of the smooth surface.
I clearcoated way too soon and too much also.

Don,

The outside surface will almost always chip due to road debris. That's why I only paint the recessed areas.
