Will a 86 motor fit into a pre 85.5
As i have mentioned in a few previous posts my 86 na got T-Boned last week so i am looking for a car that needs a motor to put my motor/trans... etc into. If i buy, lets say an 84 for example am i going to have compatability issues with the motor/trans? Or should i try to find an 86. Or should i just cut my losses and find another car all together and part out my 86.
Thanks

You wil also have issues with the DME. The mapping on the early DME is a lot different then on a late. Also the above mentioned items, trans mount and the speedometer is different. The lates have a sensor in the trans, I have been told a early can be drilled and tapped to fit the sensor tho.

The engine and DME need to be the same. The good news is the wiring harness from the engine will go right through to to the footwell where you will install the DME that matches the engine.
The other issues will need to be sorted out, ie: transmission mount/gauges etc.

Well to get in to some details on the engine thing.
You can swap the engine from an 86 and put it into an 84 chassis. You can use either early or late DME's. Which one you used depends on the Air Flow Meter used and fuel injectors/ idle valve.
This stuff is easy to replace when swapping engines. For minimal problems match the AFM/DME/Fuel Rail/Injectors/Idle Valve with the chassis. The basic engine can be dropped in any year chassis and will bolt right up with no issues at all.
Long ago I put and 87 924S engine from a wrecked car in to an 84 944 chassis. In that case I used all the 87 parts and swapped them into the 84 body, but I could have just moved the motor and had it been just fine.

From what I understand, you can use the same wiring harness and change ONLY the afm and dme. Use the early transmission and just change the engine. The fuel lines are routed differently so if you use the early rail, you will have no problems. The 86 engine uses a different cam as the 83/84 uses the same cam as a turbo.
