Default need a trans

it appears i blew the trans on my 1987 951. Does anyone know where i can pick up a used one in working condition? What would be a fair price for a working one if i trade in my old one as a core?

Depends on what you want. Used would probably be around $ 500. Rebuilt would probably be around $ 1200 - 1500.

On the pelican " for sale boards " there is one with LSD for $1250. Might as well upgrade if you need to replace anyway.

I havent seen a turbo trans for $500 yet. Let me know if you do find one though, a friend is looking. Most of them go for $750-$1K.

For a price comparison:

I just sold off an 87 Turbo trans, open diff, no oil cooler, with 130+ miles, in known good/working order, for $450. It was a local pickup, so I dropped a few bucks off the price - otherwise, I probably would have advertized it starting at $500-550.

thanks for the tips guys. How long does a turbo trans usually last. the one i saw has 190K mi. Is that too much to be worth buying? I cant afford to buy it and then need a new one in the near future.

if your selling the car and spend $500 extra on LSD, you would get $500-$1k more for having an lsd. I wouldn't even consider a 951 without it.

assuming the only thing wrong with my car is the trans and i buy a new one, how difficult is it to swap trasmissions? Does anyone have a guess on the amount of shop time?

Mine is at the mechanic getting rebuilt. I think it's costing me $2.5k. Am I getting hosed?

Parts alone for a basic rebuild (bearings, synchros, and seals) are close to $800. Disassembly and reassembly of the gear carrier, input and pinion shafts is at least 10 hours of work. Tack on a few more shop hours for removal and reinstallation of the trans from the car. So no, $2500 is pretty average for a complete rebuild by a knowledgeable/reputible 944 shop.

I've got a non-LSD tranny (with oil cooler) out of an 86 951 sitting in my garage. It has about 100K miles on it and ran fine when I took it out of the car earlier this year. I swapped it out for an LSD.

I'll let it go for $500

Swapping trannies isn't too dificult. I did it on the floor of my garage with some basic hand tools and the help of my 12 year-old son. Step-by-step directions are posted here on the list somewhere. A good shop should be able to do it in a few hours.
