Default 944 weight

Alright guys, I want to ask you all something here, what is a "Realistic" weight of a 944 race car?

The class I'm racing in allows the car to be 2600-2750 (depending on setup). Now a stripped out 944 I think should be able to reach that weight. Now my question is, what would it take to drop another 400lbs? Could i do this without and fibreglass body parts, and nothing really exotic?

I'm thinking of going up one class to race witht he faster cars. But to do that in a 2.5L i need to lose so weight

Here is what I am doing with my track 944 - I am not conforming to any race rules and I am keeping it just barely street legal enough to pass inspection. I am going to use it for DE's and just general fun which is why I am unconcerned about regs.

Strip interior of EVERYTHING
Remove dash, fab simple instrument panel to mount gauges
All climate control stuff is going away, will install a small fan for driver
Side glass and hopefully hatch will be replaced with polycarbonate
Ditch window regulators for a strap up/down similiar to the outlaw 356's
Fixed healights - delete motor and torque tube
All unnecessary bracketry is going - spare tire mount, interior mounts, etc.
All soundproofing that is reasonable removable is going

The FSM states the curb weight for a 1987 944S as 2822 lbs. I'm too lazy to get up and go check my car's sticker under the hood to see the 944 NA weight. So you'd have to lose at least 72 lbs out of your car to be in that 2600-2750 class. The if you want to lose another 400 lbs, you're saying you want a total weight reduction of 472 lbs. I don't know how much individual car parts weigh, but you might as well try and just start gutting things out. I do know that it won't be as easy as yanking out carpets and the rear wiper. Good Luck!

The only thing on that list that i have not done is the Instrument pannel. I'm keeping the stock dash thus far. That, and the heater motor i have not removed that yet, but it is on the list.

I guess I'll have to weigh the car sometime to see how much it weights. I mean 400lbs is a LOT to lose.

I know the GT fenders are supposed to be pretty light, especially compared to the stock ones - they are kinda price though - same for the hood. I was also contemplating cutting the middle out of the sunroof, leaving a large square hole and just a frame around the inside. Then, take a sheet of pre-preg CF and make a lightweight panel to close the hold back up. I don't know if it is worth it, but I do know that the sunroof is pretty heavy.......

Manual windows w/lexan and a manual steering rack will help shed a good 50 lbs, if not more.

My brother is working on getting lexan windows made up for his car and mine at his school. I'll see how he feels about making a few extras, if you are interested.

Don't forget about getting rid of the A/C, the whole thing.

I might have missed it, but I don't think anyone mentioned seats.

The 12 way cloth power seats that were in my 951 weighed in at 60lbs. EACH.

My current aftermarket seats are 27lbs each if I remember correctly, and that's not exactly light. I'm pretty sure there are plenty of race seats in the 15-20lb range.

I weighed my turbo in at just over 3100lbs stock it's now just a bit under 2700lbs. Stripped interior, some lexan, GT Racing fenders, hood, bumper cover, rear bumper, nose panel, AIR splitter, Sparco seats. Windows are going manual, sunroof is manual, locks are manual, side windows are going lexan, manual steering, only other thing left is to finish the AC delete. Oh and I gutted about 40lbs of wiring.

1991 S2 2790lbs with 1/3 tank of gas
No interior carpet, one race seat, Lexan windshield, AC delete, cruise control removed, headlight motor removed, heater blower/fan removed, light weight battery, lightweight race wheels (Fikse 18's) stock seatbelts&stock steering wheel removed,Leda coilovers.
Extra weight added back in, full roll cage, cool suit cooler, big brakes, video camera,Aim computer, racing radios, driver drink system.

Fiberglass hood would save another 25-27 lbs

I would go lexan hatch, fiberglass hood, fiberglass doors, fiberglass fenders (in that order for max weight savings) want to save weight up high (hood and hatch) fenders dont save that much and I really like solid doors for racing!!!

My stock 1989 944 S2 weighed 2975# w/ 1/2 tank of gas.
I've completely stripped the interior, put in a full cage (100#) and 2 Sparco seats. Deleted the A/C, cruise control, side windows w/ motors, headlights w/ motor and installed a full set of Leda Coil Overs.
The car now weighs exactly 2748# w/ 1/2 tank (or approx 2688# empty). Other than going into the dash I don't think there's much more to be removed unless you go to CF panels etc.
