Talking Ran my brother's $800 944 today - success - but some little things......

Car is an 85, build date is 4/84, it is silver on black with Fuch wheels. Power steering, AC that has been converted to R134A, not sure if it works. Guy had it advertised in the paper as having a cracked head - it became apparent he was an idiot and did not care to take care of it and mis-diagnosed the problem. Turned out it was a simple case of bad oil cooler seals.

Ok, today we got everything put back together and with fingers crossed dad turned the key. The car started INSTANTLY, even on oldish gas! Oil pressure as you can see in the picture is good, runs smooth since I properly aligned the balace shafts. There is a little lifter noise but we have only run it for a minute or two and it has been sitting for at least 6months.

Ok, I know very little about early cars and thier controls. How do you engage the AC compressor? The tach is stuch at 2500rpm and does not respond to changes in the engine RPM - any ideas? Anyway, Eric - my little brother is pretty excited - can't wait to take it on a road test!

Great! The **** to the right of the oil pressure gage is your AC on switch. Turn it clockwise to 1, 2 or 3 (low, medium, high) fan speed. The larger diameter ring with the blue stripe sets the AC thermostat. rotate clockwise for colder temperature in the cabin.

Well, we put the hood back on and drove it up and down our private road a couple times - suspension bushings and shocks are worn-out, but that is next on the list. Other than that, it runs just fine! Hopefully we will get the air dam repairs done today and get the proper fog lights back in it and it will be ready to drive - next is paint. The inspection sticker is still valid although the license has lapsed, should be in daily driver use before too long!

sracer - I was kinda thinking the same thing - the brake pads are brand new, but the sensors could be screwed up.

85944na, in the third pic you can see the parking brake light, but it goes out when I push the button.

But yeah, pardon my ignorance - I really am not used to the early interior.

sorry, my bad, my screen is small and i didn't see that light on, that is your brake pad warning light, my guess is that they put in new pads and didn't replace the sensors or they just went bad or were not hooked up properly. when i got my car that brake pad warning light came on and I had no idea what it was

Daniel, no sensors on early brakes IIRC, only 87 and later. The switch is bad for the parking brake. (SPST on the parking brake handle lower frame, or the wiring is worn somewhere)
AC compressor should work the same on all years.

my 87 944 didnt, the 88 944 does, huh. I guess it was the PO that removed them..

EDIT~ when I putthe new rear calipers on the 924S, (Early offset) they cane from Tifo's 85.5 and did have sensors. I stand corrected.

Also, set your vent sliders as close together as they go. This directs airflow to the main vents. Turn off the blower fan and make sure the temp slider is on cold. This is in the owner's manual- always do it before running the AC, even though the AC switch cuts out the main vent fan when the AC is on.

It's amazing how many owners mis-diagnose bad oil cooler seals for a bad head gasket. I new a guy who sold a beautiful 951 for $1500 because he thought he had a bad head gasket or a cracked head. Turned out to be the oil cooler gasket.

2 parking brake lights... one there, one on the dash.
