Default Engine Cost

Good Morning Everyone,
I found a 1986 944 for sale that is in really nice shape that has a blown engine in it because the timing belt went. The guy is selling it for $800.00 as is. My question is how much would is cost to buy a very reliable 944 NA engine and then how hard is it to put in? Thanks everyone! I hope everyone is having a great summer. Have a fanTABulous day!!! Hugs - Jaime

Eh just rebuild the head and slap it back on with a new belt. Easier in my humble opinion.

But the PO said it threw a rod and messed up a piston! But I'll have my "Porsche Fixer Guy" take a look at it! Thanks. How much labor hours would the head take?

Any other opinions?

which happened first, i wouldnt think it would have thrown a rod and timing belt at the same time, $800 isnt too bad if it has decent parts on it you could recoop your cost and maybe make a lil money if you find out its too much work. i think used engines can be had for around 400-600 for an NA though

yeah you should be able to get a good motor for less than a grand. Of course you may want to do some upgrades and maintenance- "while your in there"

did you change that. I swear it said 8000 at first.... hmmmmm sneaky devil... Myabe the decimal and extra 00's threw me off..

I know I saw someone post on here a few days ago a link to a company that did complete engine overhaul/refresh service on 944's for around $3000. see if I can find a link...

Offer him $700. Pull the head and assess the situation. If the block is bad and you can't find a good NA motor you can part it out and easily make your money back.

Jaime, if you are talking about a car in the sudbury/framingham area in massachusetts be careful with it. I looked at it but I saw that it had been in a major accident in the front and the frame was bent pretty good.

If the rest of the car is in very good shape (including the interior), it should be worth $800. If closer inspection shows the wear & tear to be more on the average side for a 20 year old car, I would try to get it down to $500. You may also want to consider that buying a used engine is a somewhat of a 'pig in poke' if you don't freshen it up before installation. Unless you can get an engine that is very well documented, may I suggest you replace con-rod bearings/oil pan gasket, oil cooler seals, water pump, rollers, front seals (crank & cam/balance shafts), rear main seal, oil separator o-rings, balance shaft housing o-rings, cam tower gaskets, new cam and b/s belts, new heater control valve.. I'm sure others will add to the list. And of course, while your in there do the clutch. IMHO, this is the only way to expect a very reliable used engine and drive train.

Just as a rule of thumb I have 2 good spare motors with <100K, both complete. The 86 w/ a fresh head would sell for $600 and the 83 probably $500. I base that on engines I've seen for sale and looked into to.
